Qué harás

The tour begins in our lobby with one of our knowledgeable tour guides. They’ll take you on a trip down memory lane, back to the American Revolution and the pioneering spirit that created this country. You’ll learn about the Bowman family and their impact on Virginia and the United States. Then, you’ll visit our distilling room to see where the magic happens. We’ll introduce you to our two stills — George and Mary, lovingly named to pay homage to the parents of the Bowman brothers — and show you our laboratory, where we test and analyze every batch to make sure it meets our very high standards. Then it’s off to the barrel dumping room, where we explain how we taste test and prepare our spirits for bottling. The next stop is everyone’s favorite sight and smell of the tour — the barrel storage and maturation area! Lastly, we take a look at our bottling line.

After the tour, we invite all guests 21 and older to join us at the tasting bar in our gift shop to try our available products. All of our spirits are available for purchase in the gift shop, including many of our limited-release products. Our gift shop also features local crafts made from our bourbon barrels, glassware, apparel, and tasty Virginia-made treats.

Please note that this experience includes a tour, tasting, and $25 voucher to our gift shop. Please note gift shop vouchers may not be redeemed for alcohol.

Our roots date back to before Prohibition when our family had a granary and dairy farm in Sunset Hills, Virginia. We used excess grain from the estate to distill spirits honoring Virginia’s first settlers. In 1934, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Abram Smith Bowman and his sons continued the family tradition and built a modern distillery in Fairfax County. The Distillery moved in 1988 and is now nestled near Fredericksburg.

As a small and privately-owned company, A. Smith Bowman Distillery holds true to our time-honored traditions. Considered a micro-distillery, we produce hand-crafted spirits using local ingredients. As Virginia’s oldest and most award-winning distillery, we’ve earned a variety of prestigious awards, including John J. Bowman Single Barrel, which received a gold medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Not only is this a phenomenal value but a must see experience for anyone who drank Bowmans in 10years ago and needs a reintroduction. This will total change your understanding of the brand and enhance your appreciation for the work that goes into running a distillery.

Guests should wear comfortable shoes for the walking tour and dress according to the weather. This is an active, working distillery so some areas of the tour get hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and it’s always a bit steamy in the distilling room.

The tour is open to all ages but you must be 21+ to partake in the tasting portion of this experience, so bring your ID if you’d like to try our products at the end of the tour.
