We will meet at the trailhead in south Phoenix and hike up Mormon Trail in South Mountain Park Preserve, one of the largest city parks in the nation. This is a climb, right out of the parking lot, with great views of the Phoenix area. I like doing this hike at sunrise for the great views and lighting, but alternate times are available. Once we reach the top of the climb, it's rolling hills and some flat desert hiking until we reach Fat Man's Pass, the beginning of Hidden Valley where we'll squeeze through two boulders that make up Fat Man's Pass into beautiful and secluded hidden valley. We are likely to see some wildlife anywhere on this hike but especially so in Hidden Valley. Many neat features and rock formations in Hidden valley, including a spot where we get on our rear ends and slide about 6 feet down a slick rock. We'll leave Hidden Valley through a natural tunnel, see a couple petroglyphs, and then begin to head back down. I know all the great spots (including some off-trail spots) for talking amazing photos. All told this is about a 4.2 mile hike and slightly under 1000 foot accumulated elevation gain. Other trails are also available. Please contact me for alternate times or hikes.

I've been passionate about hiking for several years now. I know just about every trail from beginner to expert in the Phoenix area. Have led hikes for Meetup Groups. I am the founder/admin of the "Hike AZ" Facebook page that started in August 2019.

Hidden valley featured lots of flora and fauna, ocotillo and saguaro cacti, a chance to encounter wildlife, a natural tunnel, a "slide" we have to slide down and "Fat man's pass", two boulders we squeeze through in order to get into the valley.
David was an awesome guide. I’m a New Yorker, adventurous, but inexperienced when it comes to hiking. He personalized the trip for us, took great pics, and made it an exceptional experience for us. I wish I would have booked this earlier on my trip so that I could have capitalized on all the advice he had to offer about experiencing Arizona. Highly recommended!

I am a novice hiker and couldn't decide between guided hikes in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve or South Mountain Preserve, so I did them both on consecutive days. Though both guides were great, David's hike to Hidden Valley was my favorite by far. Our guests ranged from 28 years old to a (very fit) 70 year old, and all were able to enjoy the hike, though Grandma certainly got a good workout and it would not be appropriate for people with any mobility issues. David contacted me beforehand to advise on our ability levels and correctly warned us that for beginners the ascent during the first mile is no joke! There were so many interesting areas on the Mormon Trail and David knew exactly when a where to linger for a bit and how to frame the absolute best photos. His photography skills are worth the cost alone! Even though I am not naturally a morning person, heading out at dawn and avoiding the crowds and direct sun was worth it. I would highly recommend this experience with David.

David was awesome! He was very personable and took control of taking photos and videos. Glad we have the memories... to be honest I was worried in the beginning but David kept encouraging me through that 1st mile then it was smooth sailing from there. Definitely was worth every cuss word that ran through my head and out fo my mouth. Would definitely do it again!

Proper shoes and attire for a hike, and water. I'll have extra, but you should have your own. Probably wear a hat to avoid getting sun on your face. Possibly sunglasses.
