Qué harás

Honey is a remarkable food, medicine and ingredient. The taste, viscosity, colour and aromas are linked directly to the floral sources available to the bees. In this immersive experience you will join a local food and wine enthusiast, beekeeper and bon vivant on a honey tasting, overview of the lifecycle of a colony and then suit up and visit a beehive!

The honey tasting provides a unique insight into the different tastes and textures that the bees make as they forage on different flowering plants at various stages in their flowering. Hamish harvests his honey using the Flow Hive system which allows you to take small amounts of honey at a time without disturbing the bees. In turn we get to taste honeys collected weeks and sometimes days apart and compare them. Each has a highly distinctive colour, aroma, flavour and viscosity. All of this alongside leaf tea or plunger coffee and freshly baked scones.

After the morning tea and tasting we “suit up” in a professional sting proof suit, light a smoker and visit the bees. You'll be shown through the different styles and sizes of hive, including the Flow Hive. You’ll be guided through the process of doing a standard inspection, checking the laying pattern of the queen, check for honey stores, and for pests. If we’re lucky we’ll find “Liz” the current queen (lol).

Parts of the apiary are undercover, so rain isn't a problem.

I am a keen beekeeper and got my first hives at school. I love my bees for their work pollinating the food we eat, their environmental impacts, through to the fascinating way they communicate and interact. And they make awesome honey! I am a strong advocate for inclusion, the rights of LGBTIQA people and acknowledge that these experiences take place on Gundangara lands and that sovereignty was never ceded.

Donde estarás

Hamish's apiary is in town in Bowral and backs onto a lovely creek that runs through town, just at the base of Mt Gibraltar. There is plenty of off-street parking and is walking distance to the towns shops, main street, and railway station.

We've learnt more about bees than expected. We always wanted to start our own hive and now have Hamishs' expertise to support and guide us on this journey.

My partner and I had the best time with Hamish learning about bees!! Hamish is very knowledgeable, friendly as well as passionate and gave us a great introduction to the world of beekeeping. A lovely few hours spent with tea and delicious scones with honey, too! Would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone exploring the area - definitely won’t regret it! Thanks Hamish!!

Thankyou Hamish for a very enjoyable and informative time with you and the bees. Couldnt believe these creatures just capture your mind and wanting to know more than just supplying their final gift of honey
