Qué harás

We take guests into the mountains of Kentucky Appalachia by vehicle, guided by local, trained guides, to see and meet the free-roaming horses of Kentucky. Some horses are tame, others are feral. We have given guides extensive safety training and all are familiar with horses. The Guides also provide cultural and historic background of the area during the 30 minute ride up the mountain, and back. While encountering the herds, our guides first make sure there are not too many horses around the vehicle so that no one gets too close. This is usually not the case, as the feral horses do not come close to the vehicle and the tame ones are friendly and don't get too pushy.
The total tour is 3 hours, and we offer a money back guarantee if they do not see any horses. But our guides know the mountains and where the horses hang out, so that has never happened.
35% of the tour fees go towards our hay and vet fund. We pick up horses when they need extra feed to stay healthy or if they are ill or diseased, or if they wander onto private property. All horses are adopted out once they are healthy again.
We started as an AirBnB experience in 2019 and had 9 months of successful tours; but then shut down due to COVID.
Our current COVID practices include requiring masks, only taking one group at a time in a vehicle, and practicing social distancing while outside of the vehicle.

I have owned horses for 50 years, and have lived in Kentucky for 24 years. I am the retired Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Council and have knowledge of appropriate animal welfare practices. I also have a network of horse rescues that we work with. The local guides have the knowledge of the rich culture and history of the area where these horses live. There are 4 part time guides, and one part time Horse Welfare Manager.

Acerca de la organización: Appalachian Horse Project

The Appalachian Horse Project (AHP) addresses the problem of free-roaming horses that are living and breeding in Eastern Kentucky’s mountains, often on former coal producing sites. We provide oversight and management of these herds, caring for sick or injured horses, or horses that wander off the mountains into residential areas. AHP is a 501C3 nonprofit, with a board of equine specialists.

Esta es una experiencia solidaria en la que todo lo que pagas se destina a Appalachian Horse Project.

Donde estarás

The Appalachian area of Southeast Kentucky is filled with beautiful towering mountains, bubbling creeks, limestone outcroppings with small waterfalls, and a diversity of birds and wildlife. We take our visitors to the top of one of the most well known mountains where coal was mined 50 years ago. It has now grown into meadows and woods which are ideal for horses.

It was a great experience with beautiful scenery, a thoughtful tour guide, and a unique encounter with animals. I would strongly recommend it. Our kids are 5 and 6, and they really liked it too.

Wasn’t sure what to expect with wild animals; sometimes they show up and other times they don’t. Once we found the first group, they started coming from everywhere. Many were very socialized to people and came close enough to touch. Very cool, unique experience.

Being ranchers from Arizona, We tend to avoid the stereotypical horse experience while traveling. Something about this experience caught our eye. It was SOOO much more then we expected. We would be standing there listening to a single neigh off on the distance, then another then the woods came to life as the horses wandered over to investigate us. When they learned we were no harm we were shortly blessed to see 30+ horses wander out to greet us. This is not your typical horse experience!!! We witnessed well over 150 horses, pet and feed, quite a few that were friendly. The work this organization does is thankless, hard and very needed. We wish we didn't live over 1700 miles away, we would instantly become volunteers! Please consider donating!

This was the highlight of our trip..Liz, our guide, was delightful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We saw several horse herds and enjoyed giving them treats and observing wild horse behavior. All in all, an awesome adventure for outdoorsy people and animal lovers.. We would definitely visit again if we return to the area.

Great Time! Even as someone that doesn’t fall into the category of “ horse lover”, I found the experience awesome. The stories sharing the history of the area and the how the horses came to be where great. Going on the tour has certainly given me a greater appreciation for horses.
