This walking tour in Salt Lake City visits eight magnificent religious edifices, none of them home to Utah’s predominant religion. Not long after the Mormon Pioneers, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, people of other faiths came too. During the forty-year construction of the Salt Lake Temple, a red sandstone Episcopal cathedral was built a couple of blocks away. Not long after the temple was completed, a magnificent Catholic cathedral opened nearby as well as a lovely Presbyterian church. On this tour, learn the stories behind theses historic religious structures, their architecture, and more.

We'll see:
•St. Mark's Cathedral (Episcopalian, 1871)
•Cathedral of the Madeleine (Catholic, 1909)
•First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City (1905)
•Immanuel Baptist Church (1911), now Anthony's Fine Art and Antiques
•Historic B'nai Israel Temple (1891), now a private design firm
•Iglesia La Luz del Mundo (former First Church of Christ Scientist, 1898)
•Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Christian Church (former Congregation Montefiore Synagogue, 1903)
•First United Methodist Church (1905)

I have connected with the churches and businesses on our tour. Some have graciously agreed to let us go inside, depending on their availability.

I hope the architecture and stories inspire you as you glimpse into the diversity that is Utah

Many years ago, as a student at LDS Business College (now Ensign College), I started studying interior design in the carriage house of the Enos Wall Mansion on South Temple in Salt Lake City. While learning about great historical design in Europe, I began finding examples of it in Salt Lake. Right next door to the carriage house stands a stunning Presbyterian church, and a block further is Cathedral of the Madeleine. Around this same time, I started sharing the secrets of Salt Lake with family and friends that I had learned while out exploring. From this grew my dream of giving tours of Salt Lake City. As glorious and wonderful Temple Square is, I want people to leave this city with a greater appreciation for all who made it great.

Donde estarás

City sidewalks are our path from building to building. At some stops, we'll go from the busy city sidewalks into peaceful sanctuaries that are filled with light filtered through stained-glass windows, some elaborately decorated with frescoes on the walls and ceilings.

We loved this—we’re from SLC but didn’t know the history of these buildings or the religious history of downtown. Kevin is knowledgeable and friendly, a perfect host.

We had a great time with Kevin-very informative and friendly! Was accommodating of our need to cut the tour short a bit due to time constraints. Would certainly recommend!

I had a comfortable, fun experience with Kevin and other attendees. It was super informative, shows you some of the best parts of down town which are home to great places of worship. This is a great chance to familiarize yourself with what gives this city its warmth, sense of community, and character. I enjoyed all of it.
