Qué harás

In this lesson, you can experience iai, kendo (gekken) and tameshigiri (test cutting performed on rolled up straw mats) at one time.
These three disciplines make up what is called kenjutsu (swordmanship). In iai guests learn how to handle the katana. In gekken guests learn how to face an opponent. In batto guests learn correct cutting methods.
When guests arrive at the dojo they will change into a traditional training uniform called a keikogi.
First, guests will learn the basic history of Japanese swords and how they are manufactured. Guests will also actually disassemble a sword to deepen their understanding of its parts.
During the iai lesson, guests will learn proper sword etiquette, and the basics of handling and swinging a sword.
Next, using a bokuto guests will learn how to use the sori (curve) and shinogi (center ridge) of the sword. After that, guests will learn about offense and defense when facing an opponent using a padded gekken sparring practice sword in a mock duel.
Lastly, guests will be able to try test cutting .Each guest will have the chance to try cutting two rolled up straw mats. Cutting at the correct angle will result in a cut with no resistance to the blade.
Once a guest has completed the above three basic disciplines, they will receive a certificate of completion from Toyama Bizenkai. Please take this experience home as a memory of Japan.

I hold the rank of 6th degree instructor in Zen Nihon Toyama Iaido Renmei (ZNTIR).I am an instructor at ZNTIR's headquarters as well as a practitioner of traditional Japanese horseback archery which is called yabusame.
I have 22 years of experience in both swordsmanship and yabusame.
I work towards promoting and transmitting authentic Japanese culture to the world and future generations.
The experiences I provide are not a form of entertainment or performance.
There are many instances were groups or teachers take advantage of foreign visitors’ lack of knowledge about Japanese culture and provide them with a pseudo experience. I sincerely believe this is wrong and only teach authentic Japanese Swordsmanship and spirit. For those who wish to have a proper experience, or want to study authentic kenjutsu, please come join one of my lesson.

Donde estarás

The Toyama school of swordsmanship was originally taught by the old Japanese army and was the last kenjutsu to be used in actual combat.
It was developed by combining the specialties of various sword schools.
Under normal circumstances, this type of thing would never have happened.
You can experience it at the honbu dojo (headquarters).
Please come even if you have already had a samurai or ninja experience.

This was by far my favorite experience in Japan. I am so glad I took the chance to try this out! I learned about the history of martial arts in Japan, the history of Japanese swordsmanship, the different types of Japanese swords, how to put on a hakama, how to disassemble a sword and it’s anatomy, how to wear a sword, sword drawing techniques, cutting techniques, defensive techniques, had a great sparring session and last but not least got to cut Tatami matts! Yoshioki is a great teacher, and coach and taught me more than I expected. I wish I lived nearby just so I could continue learning from him. I cannot stress how much of an awesome experience this has been! For anyone who has ever had an interest in samurai swords and Japanese martial arts this is a must!

An unforgettable experience and glimpse into the proud and fascinating world of the Samurais. Yoshioki is extremely polite, professional and passionate. He has a vast knowledge of swordmanship and Japanese history which he delivers with a glimpse in the eye, respect and no-bullshit. His skill is impressive and there can be no doubt of his mastery of the sword. He also teaches with great calm, individual attention and great enthusiasm. We ordered 2 hour course, came 20 mins late (the venue is quite far from central Tokyo ) and got 3,5 hours of training. Remember to eat well before you start (you´ll be hungry by the end) and bring water. Definitely worth every penny - a truly unique experience!

Best experience ever !!! Unlike a lot of other samurai experience which focused mainly on taking nice photos , sensei yoshioki actually focused on the important thing - how to use a sword , instead of how to pose with them . If i can give beyond 5 stars i will definitely do so !!!

We were looking for an experience that's more focused on skills and less frills, and that's exactly what we got and more. Master Yoshioki is extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot from the experience. From the clothing we wore to the history, making and usage of the swords, and what things we should pay attention to with detailed explanation as to why, master Yoshioki is able to showcase the seriousness as well as beauty of swordsmanship, impart an air of respect but at the same time be super personable and humorous. We got a real lesson in swordsmanship and got to try what we learned by cutting real tatami! It was a humbling experience but extremely fun at the same time! Bonus, it was a really great workout as well and got us ready for more delicious Japanese food after :D. We were worried about the location being far off but it was easy to get to on public transportation, and the town of Machida is really charming and there's a lot of shopping to be done here without having to compete with a million tourists. It's a great excursion from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. This experience is truly a hidden gem! Don't miss it!
