Qué harás

As day turns to dusk, we’ll walk through the serene woodlands of Brown Robin nature reserve, taking in the sights and sounds of the season. In spring, it’s swathed with bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn brings a peppering of colourful waxcap fungi. Look to the horizon for views of Morecambe Bay glittering in the distance.

Our destination for the evening is an under-canvas hide, carefully positioned on the edge of the woods to overlook a badger sett – the den where they slumber during the day. Take a seat on the benches, get cosy with blankets and cushions, then settle in for some wildlife-spotting.

I’ll have binoculars for you to use, as well as night-vision equipment so that you can get a really good look at the badgers foraging, playing and exploring. We’ll also use bat detectors to capture the sounds of bat calls – normally too high-pitched for humans to hear – allowing us to ID the different species swooping overhead. Keep your eyes peeled for deer and foxes roaming through the undergrowth.

Making our way back through the woods, spying more nocturnal wildlife as we go, we’ll head to the Woodland Workshop. Gather around the open fire for a bowl of something warming and delicious – think steaming soup, plus marshmallows toasted over the fire and perhaps a mug of hot chocolate.

Need to book for a bigger group? Please get in touch as we may be able to help.

I'm the South Western Reserves Officer for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, taking care of places like Brown Robin nature reserve in Grange-Over-Sands, where we'll host this experience.

Woodlands are such a special place in our countryside and I’ve worked in and around trees since I was 15. I came to The Cumbria Wildlife Trust 10 years ago and have been have conserving the special wildlife of Brown Robin since then. In that time, I've learned so much about the animals and plants here.

The nature reserve is fantastic place for all sorts of species and spending days there (and a few nights) has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in the life of the animals up there. It really is a special experience to view these fantastic and elusive creatures in their natural world.

Acerca de la organización: Cumbria Wildlife Trust

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is the only voluntary organisation devoted solely to the conservation of the wildlife and wildplaces of Cumbria. The Trust stands up for wildlife, creates wildlife havens, and seeks to raise environmental awareness.

Esta es una experiencia solidaria en la que todo lo que pagas se destina a Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Donde estarás

Brown Robin is a limestone woodland of ash and hazel trees, with yew forming dense stands in places.

A magnificent display of bluebells, wood anemone, wild garlic and primroses carpet the woodland in spring, while spurge laurel, a small shrub with highly-scented flowers, thrives here at the northern edge of its range in Britain.

The grasslands have been fertiliser-free for many years and are grazed by cattle, which encourages wildflowers.

My husband and I absolutely loved our wildlife adventure experience and we learnt so much from it. We saw two sweet young badgers and loads of bats (and heard them as well, which was so cool). It was so interesting to hear the story of the Wildlife Trust and their work in conserving natural places in the area. The soup was delicious too. We would love to do it again!

Great experience, loved seeing the badgers in their natural environment. Nice to sit by the campfire afterwards chatting, very relaxing. Peter and Tony were very helpful and knowledgeable, and we learnt a few new things. A few steeper paths on the walk so you need to be relatively fit.

A must do activity! Pete is insanely knowledgeable about the nature reserves and about the animals we came across. He offers insight and facts about all that you see and is able to answer any questions. A truly passionate person about his job. The activity was a lovely walk through the nature reserve to get to the badger set. We had to be super quiet and wait, and luckily we saw real life Bambi and his mum, as well as 2 badgers! Super exciting and amazing experience! Highly recommend.
