In this workshop you will learn how to carve and cast liquid metal into cuttle bone. By the end of the day, you will have created a unique and unusual piece of jewellery or a small sculptural object.
This casting techniques enables you to achieve exciting one off a kind items. Together with sand casting it is one of the earliest casting techniques.
Cuttlebone casting is intriguing and fascinating; a method where you can observe the transformation of solid to liquid and back to solid. Cuttlebones are regularly washed up on beaches.
Precious metals, copper and brass in form of clean scraps or casting grains are melted and then gravity poured into a prepared mould. The molten liquid fills the design carved into the cuttlebone mould.
Your designs can be carved freehand with simple tools or can be pressed with found objects or textures into the pre-prepared cuttlebone. Any necessary tools or equipment will be provided. Even if you have never worked with metals before you don't need to worry! You will be amazed at the end of your workshop duration what you will have achieved, whilst having a great time.
Cuttle bone casting is easy, sustainable, fun, creative and full of suspense. Like your fingerprint no one cuttle bone is the same. The pattern created from the casting reminds of the pattern left on the beach by receding waves.
