Qué harás

We will begin by learning about Shetland sheep, their management, what a ruminant is and other facts specific to the Shetland breed of sheep. I will talk with guests about why we are breeding the sheep we have and what it means for them to be on the Nature Conservancy's list of recovering breeds and why it is important to continue smart farming practices to conserve breeds that are important to diverse agriculture.
Once guests have had their fill of sheep snuggles, I'll talk about the benefits of wool and demonstrate different processing techniques to show guests how the wool goes from fluff to useable yarn and fabric. Guests will have the opportunity to dive in and try their hands at wool carding, spinning and knitting with guided instruction.
My hope is that guests will leave with a better understanding of the importance of conserving rare agricultural animal breeds, how their conscious choices while shopping for products can make a huge difference in animals lives, small farmers lives, their communities and the environment. Our goal is to take care of our environment while promoting rare agricultural animal breeds and educate others about the importance of taking care of the land, the animals and each other. Our educational experience packs tons of information and instruction into just an hour long mini class.

I have been a fiber artist for over 20 years, primarily working with wool. I have a B.S. in animal science from the University of Vermont, and deeply care about the proper care of animals and our environment. I love sharing my knowledge and skills with others and have been teaching fiber arts classes for a number of years. Since starting my sheep farm, I have been able to combine my love of animal care with fiber arts.

Donde estarás

Our farm is in a rural area, surrounded by farm land and just a mile from the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain. Wildlife abounds, from song birds, to deer, you'll love listening to the peaceful sounds of nature. We're located halfway between the bustling city of Burlington and the laid back, bucolic city of Middlebury. There are lots of wonderful museums, restaurants and attractions all within 10-20 miles.

We felt very welcomed and like we were able to learn a bunch with our time with Kelly. She was willing to spend extra time with us in order to share information on Vermont and the sheep tending. We were very grateful for our interaction with Kelly , Her husband and their farm.

Kelly gave us a very nice tour of her sheep farm and thoroughly explained how sheep farming works. It was fascinating, very relaxing and offered an opportunity to get to know the cute sheep up close.
