PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19 I am limiting the number of guests to allow for maximum social distancing. Please only book this experience if you are fully vaccinated. Thank you.

Welcome aboard my Downeaster 38, "Fred B. Wood"! Designed by renowned naval architect, Henry Morschlad, this Downeaster is in exceptionally good condition. Downeaster's are known as being stout and seaworthy bluewater cruisers. They can be found all over the globe. This experience is available for up to six guests! (Please note that I recently upgraded to a larger Downeaster 38 from an Ericson 27 which is shown in some of the photos!)

Your three-hour adventure starts at Jack London Square. The route will depend on wind conditions; however, our goal is to cross the bay to see the marvelous sites of South Beach Harbor (home of the SF Giants), the financial district, the bay bridge, and then Treasure Island. During the tour, you'll see amazing wildlife; including, flocks of pelicans, sea lions, and the occasional dolphin!

This is an active experience! I will review the basics of sailing (wind angle, general terms for operating the vessel, and rules of the road). You will take a turn at the helm (wheel), manage the sheets that control the sails, and raise and lower the sails. Naturally, you are also welcome to just sit back and enjoy the amazing views.

I am a USCG Licensed Captain. I have been a highly rated Airbnb host for six years and have been around boats my entire life. I have owned and operated many types of sail and powerboats. San Francisco Bay provides beautiful views and wildlife; including harbor seals, dolphins, and amazing birds. In addition, the microclimates in the bay mean you can go from boisterous conditions to nearly tropical calm in just minutes. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with guests!

Donde estarás

We'll depart from historic Jack London Square and (depending on wind conditions) begin our sail in the Oakland Estuary. We'll see the ramps where the Liberty Ships were built by Kaiser shipyards in WW II. As we head west we'll pass by the houseboats of Alameda. We'll then head west and with the wind on our beam cross the bay to see South Beach Harbor, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island before running downwind back to Jack London Square.

David was an awesome host! This was a great experience that went above our expectations! Captain David was knowledgeable and shared a lot of hidden treasures about the bay! The views were amazing! The boat was so comfortable and wonderfully maintained. There was plenty of snacks and refreshments. As a local we highly recommend and looking forward to another experience with David in the near future.

We had an absolutely terrific time on Captain Dave's boat! We did this as a birthday experience, and it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon - learning some of the basics of sailing, getting an opportunity to steer the boat / raise the sails, and enjoying the beautiful views of the Bay. Captain Dave is so funny, thoughtful, and hospitable - he made us feel very comfortable aboard, answered all our questions with cheer, and even baked us hot appetizers & cookies! Highly recommend this experience with Captain Dave, whether you're a local or a tourist!

If you come to the bay area and don't go on this tour, you are doing yourself a grave disservice. David was an amazing host full of knowledge, the views were spectacular, the group was kept small, AND there were fresh baked cookies! If I had time to do it again before the end if my trip, I absolutely would. Such a great experience that I'll recommend to everyone.

COVID precautions: I booked in July 2021 for a group of 3 and a gentleman booked separately on the same time slot. Everyone was vaccinated but we were able to keep some distance (not a full 6ft+ though) and could wear masks if we wanted. About the experience: What a refreshing ride with amazing views! David is a welcoming and enthusiastic teacher with loads of experience. He gave us a tour of the boat (yes, it’s big enough for a tour!) then handed us life jackets and explained the sailing terminology before we set sail from the Oakland harbor. There was an opportunity for everyone on board to steer if they wanted, or even help put up the different sails. David is happy to share stories, answer questions (he loves questions haha!), and talk about what’s going on or let you relax and watch the view. We enjoyed the stunning sunset in the evening as a backdrop against downtown SF including Oracle Stadium, Bay Bridge, islands, and pelicans and seagulls circling around. Tips: Prepare for a 2.5-3hour sail depending on the conditions. (Ours ran a little long due to detouring around some big cargo ships but it gave us more time for photos. 😊) David offered plenty of snacks and refreshments (water, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, flavored sparkling water, cookies, crackers, fruit snacks, cheese bites, etc), but if you have dietary restrictions you might still want to bring your own drinks and snacks in case (FYI there is a microwave, sink, and ice cooler on board). It was a surprisingly big boat with plenty of space to move around to take photos or store belongings, and even includes a bathroom on board (be careful as the pipes are quite small!). The meet up location was close to Chinatown so we grabbed lunch beforehand at Ming’s Dim Sum and drinks from the Sweet Booth before heading over (extra tip: you can ask for a restroom key from the library branch across from the Sweet Booth).

David was amazing at explaining everything, and we asked A LOT of questions! Freddie is such a beauty to sail in the pacific and kept it very stable all through the 3 hours ride - I am someone that’s really afraid of the ocean but didn’t feel a thing at all times! There’s a washroom and even an oven in the boat and David cooked us some piping hot appetizers to start and chocolate chip cookies to end our ride ❤️ such a thoughtful gesture that made our ride even better! Will definitely come back!

David was a gracious host and made the experience 10x better! He gave everyone a chance to sail the boat which was an incredible experience. Plus the tasteful touches such as freshly baked cookies and snacks and everything else he did to make the trip comfortable. I would definitely recommend this experience to both locals and tourists looking to see city from a different angle.
