Nature in Japan is very rich in the world.
Japanese people have traditionally lived together with nature.
For example, various materials such as foods, daily necessities, buildings, etc. have been obtained from forest.
Even today you can see such life when you go to the countryside.

In this experience, we will hike in the country village where is a model for the movie "My Neighbor Totoro".
In spite of easy access from central Tokyo, it is not developed urban and leaves the country atmosphere.
The local people are still living in the traditional way.
So there you can see typical traditional life, rice fields, farmlands, forests, shrines, temples and old Japanese style houses as in the movie.
We will also visit a tea farmer's house where they provide you a real Japanese green tea since this area is one of the top tea producing areas in Japan.
There is no such a nice and enjoyable area to taste the Japanese countryside near Tokyo.

During our hike, I will explain about the wild animals and plants, and how they relate to Japanese culture and history,
and I'll provide you Japanese unique snacks made with the local plant as well.

Now let's explore with me!

# This tour opens basically from Mar to Jun and from mid-Sep to mid-Jan.

I love nature.
To share nature knowledges such as wildlife and ecology is my pleasure, because I want everyone to feel its beauty and wonder.

Donde estarás

We'll go to the village where is a model for the movie "My Neighbor Totoro", about 1 hour from central Tokyo.

We'll visit various spots where we can feel the air of the country, rice field, forest, old house, shrine, temple, tea factory, etc.
And we'll also visit a museum where we can learn about the local wildlife.

*We can choose either a restaurant or an outdoor field where we have lunch.
*Even if it rains, we can hike on the same route.

Eiji San is an amazing guide. He has in depth knowledge of Japanese history and culture and agriculture, I feel like spending a fruitful day with a living encyclopedia!! He can answer eveyrthing and always surprise me for all the information he has given me. Eiji San is very friendly and professional and passionate. This is a tour that I recommend to everyone who wants to understand truly about Japan (I think Japanese can also join this trip as the information and knowledge Eiji San is sharing is very advanced in depth level and I think even Japanese might not know) Truly appreciate Eiji San's effort and seriousness and I have huge respect for him for touring this trip as he is a 500% professional.

It was a loooooong trip, awesome! The view in the forest would definitely impressed you. The museums about the forest and Totoro were lack of exhibitions but you can have a nice rest there. I really enjoyed the visit and communication with the tea farm's family.

We enjoyed the tour very much. Eiji was very personable and knowledgeable about Japanese culture and the local plants and animals. The Forest was beautiful and we were able to learn about the different trees and how the Japanese people utilize the trees and take care of the nearby forests. The tour of the tea factory was very interesting and the owner was informative regarding the different varieties of tea and the best way to make green tea. The tea was wonderful. I would highly recommend this tour.

Totoro and Tea - that’s how I would describe the walk! My 10-year old son’s favourite were the Totoro references and sights, while mine was the chat with Wada-san, the tea farmer, and the opportunity to taste award-winning tea that are produced locally. Eiji-san was great at explaining many aspects of Japanese culture and nature, too! There is no need to worry about anything except to wear a good pair of walking shoes and to bring some cash for lunch (and for stocking up on tea if you are a tea-lover!)
