Qué harás

Our experience provides the best of its category -- best bicycles, guides, vehicles! We transport our guests and bikes in Mercedes Sprinters or roomy Transits, and our guides ride with very small groups. We'll visit waterfalls you will not see on other tours. You'll immerse yourself in the temperate rainforest!

We tell the stories that need to re-awaken. Beyond the 180 years of pioneers and loggers, before the century-old highway, this was the land of people with a rich mythology. We remember the long history this place holds, and tell these stories as best we can.

After we fit you for bikes at our shop in SE Portland, we'll head out in one of our Mercedes Sprinters. The bike ride and hike both take place in the Columbia River Gorge, the waterfall-laden western end of an 80-mile (130-km) canyon. At a breathtaking vista overlooking the Gorge, we'll take photos, and hear the story of who was here before us.

Over the course of the tour, we'll ride 4-6 miles (7-10 km), gentle downhill and some uphill (depending on your group) on a historic highway frequented by cyclists, see four waterfalls, hike about 1.5-2 miles (4km) -- all within a 30-40 min drive of the city. The tour is 4-5 hours; you'll remember it for years to come!

Please note we book directly as well as through AirBNB, and your overall tour group may be up to 10.

I'm Sarah Gilbert, co-founder of Around Portland Tours and together with partners & guides Edwin, Jonathan, Jeri, Everett and Monroe will host the experiences. I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and each of the narratives around which our tours are based is a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative; we call it place-based storytelling.

Between us, we have decades of experience guiding bicycling, hiking and scenic tours in the Columbia Gorge, as well as wilderness readiness training and education in the botany and geology of this place. We have taken the best of our 1000s of visits and applied it to what we do in this experience.

Donde estarás

After fitting you for a bike that fits you at our inner SE Portland bike shop, 833 SE Main #120, we'll head out to the Columbia Gorge, riding on the Historic Columbia River Highway and then taking a break from biking to hike up to a magical upper waterfall not visited by other tours. This waterfall was described by native people as the cursed wife of Coyote, the Beaver princess; we'll tell her story before we get back on our bikes to ride more.

So much fun! Carrie (sorry if I spelled it wrong) was super knowledgeable about the history of the area as well as about the forest. She made being a tour guide sound fun and exciting, which has given me a few new and good ideas 😁

This was a great experience! The views are amazing, the storytelling was interesting, and the guides were patient and informative. Even though this tour was not of the city itself, the guides really gave me a sense of the whole place and made my trip awesome. Something to know: biking is almost all down hill and the whole tour is not too physically strenuous so don’t let that stand between you and what was really an unforgettable time.

Fun experience while we were in town. Went on a few 10-20 min bike ride legs during the tour, had a nice 30 minute hike, and saw some beautiful waterfalls. Got dropped off door to door afterward which was really above and beyond.

The bike and hike tour was awesome! Such a great experience. If you are ever in the Portland area this is a must. The guides are extremely cordial, passionate and knowledgeable. The bike ride was amazing and the hike takes you to the best views of the waterfalls!

This experience was a great way to get out of the city and see some waterfalls! The downhill coasting on the bike from the of the Vista Point house is INCREDIBLE. You’re flying down the road taking all of the scenery and it was the highlight of the tour. I will say that if you’re not an avid biker or know how to work the gears of a bike going up the hill can certainly be a workout!

I took the city tour a day prior to this tour and it is a must! If you want to learn about this complex city and don’t have a car to get around you have to book this! Even if you have a car, get this!
