Ubicación

Jaibalito, Solola, Guatemala

The quaint Mayan hamlet of Jaibalito is located on the north shore of Lake Atitlan as part of the municipality of Santa Cruz la Laguna, a town located to the east. Its location on the lake makes it ideal for exploring the lake. We are in the center of the village, about a 2-minute walk up from the public dock where the boats from San Pedro and Panajachel arrive. There are some small grocery stores in the village, the best-equipped one being Mercado Jaibalito. People in Jaibalito are very friendly. It is common to greet everyone you encounter. Nearby activities include hiking, swimming, kayaking and exploring Mayan villages.

Here are some grocery recommendations so you can prepare your own meals as well as suggestions for local restaurants. In our village you’ll find the following restaurants and shops:

The best-known place is the Posada Jaibalito (Hans'): open 7:00 to 20:00, 7 days a week, serving mainly homemade and very fresh German food. Hans roasts and sells coffee, offers freshly baked bread, avocados, limes, cookies, kambucha and alcohol. Make sure to grab a seat and a menu and when you're ready to order, walk to the kitchen and let them know your selection. His girls tend to be a little shy.

Hans' Mercado Jaibalito on the main street supplies us with a lot of grocery needs such as fruits, vegetables, cheeses, yoghurt, milk, granola, dry goods, oils, candles, flash lights. This little grocery store is open from 8:30 to 16:00. The other local tiendas tend to have dried goods such as flour and sugar, snack food, soda's, beer, milk and cigarettes. We also have a little veggie stand on the main road and there are two fried chicken and fries places as well, mainly on the weekend.

Half a block down from Hans' there used to be a small restaurant: El Pato Negro. Right now they are hosting a Wednesday night movie presentation and a Friday night dinner, which you’d have to sign up for by Monday. Alcohol is served here every afternoon and evening.

In the upper part of the village, on a small side street you'll find a local restaurant called Cafe Escondido, serving simple Guatemalan fare from 08:00 to 20:00 every day.

There are a few cantinas in town. However we advise you don’t frequent them other than to purchase alcohol to go.

Just east of the main dock, a 3-minute walk will take you to Club Ven Aca, serving good drinks and tasty gringo food poolside. They also have a hot tub available for rent. Hours are 11:00 to 17:00 Wednesday through Monday.

If you walk a little further along the lake you'll come to a hotel, called the Casa del Mundo. They serve breakfast and lunch from 08:00 to 11:00 and 12:00 to 14:00. Dinner is served family style at 18:30, but requires reservations.

Most grocery items and restaurant are available in Panajachel, a 30-minute boat ride away. Look for Sandra’s on the Calle Principal, a block north of the intersection with the Calle Santander. Further north on the next corner is Chalo’s. Or turn right at the Chalo’s corner and cross the street to get to the Despensa Familiar. If you continue up the Calle Principal instead of turning at Chalo’s, you’ll get to the Mercado (public market) a few blocks further. There is a health food store in San Pedro, a 40-minute boat ride, walk up from the dock and turn left at the first intersection to find it. Santa Cruz has a lovely market from 10:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays for grocery and specialty item shopping.

In making sure you are as comfortable as possible, we have left some drinks for purchase in your casita. You'll find the price list on the fridge.

In the winter season there is a Jaibalito market in our own garden every Wendesday from 1:00Pm to 3:00PM. it is a great great together for gringos in the area with lunch, local crafts, drinks and sometimes even live music.
