*Transportation from Logan Airport, traveling times from the Airbnb to major city centers, Boston Convention Center (Seaport), colleges and local interests:

1. Traveling for Free from Logan Airport to Ashmont Train Stop (near us):

Its relatively easy from the airport to our house. You take the Silver Line bus (which itself, turns into a trolley), which then goes to your first destination, South Station. Then, you switch trains from there to the Redline train (no fare required) which takes you directly to Ashmont. Total time on Silver and Redlines is about 40-50 minutes but add time to switch trains and/or wait for the train at South Station and it’s more like an hour.

You can also ride share with Uber or Lyft from the airport in about 15-30 minutes depending on traffic and that costs approximately between $25-$35, again depending on how long it takes due to traffic and whether you select a private or shared ride (Uber Pool/Lyft Line). You can also, of course, take a regular taxi (usually at least 25% more expensive).

Also, here’s a MBTA train schedule link that might help (or possibly confuse you!):

https://www.mbta.com/schedules/741/line

2. Traveling Boston’s City Centers:

Regarding more touristy spots: From our house, It’s a 7 minute walk down the street to the red line train at Ashmont Station. Then it’s about 18-20 into South Station where you can connect to the Silver Line to go to Logan Airport. Once you reach South Station on the red line you also can exit to the street. From there you can walk or taxi to Downtown, Seaport, The Waterfront, Quincy Market (aka Faneuil Hall), The North End (Italian food) or you can continue one stop to Park St Station and switch trains to other lines (ie Green Line, Blue Line, Orange Line) to take you in different directions within the city, including Back Bay, Copley Square, Northeastern University, the town of Brookline, Boston University, Fenway Park (Kenmore Square), Boston College in Newton. You can also continue on the Red Line to MIT, Harvard and Harvard Square in Cambridge (30 minute ride from Ashmont Station)

3. General Transportation Explanation to Colleges

There is a Red Line train at Ashmont Station which is only a 7 minute walk from our Airbnb. Obviously there are many transportation options nearby: Uber/Lyft (usually arrives within 4 minutes) as well as taxi and bus services.

The Boston transit system from here primarily runs north to the city center and then there are 4 green line trains that run in a westerly direction. This perpendicular design means that, because colleges like Northeastern, Boston University, Massachusetts College of Art, MIT, Boston College etc are between 20 and 25 minutes by car but anywhere from 40-70 via train or bus depending on which college you are going to.

Its more direct to Harvard or anywhere in Cambridge and the University of Massachusetts because you can reach those destination directly from the Red Line.

There is plenty of free, easy and nearby parking here at our location if you did decide to rent a car. Uber and Lyft would be your next fastest option but obviously costs more than public transportation.

So public transportation is plentiful but takes longer. If you decide at some point to rent a car, a local car rental company, Enterprise Leasing, will come here and pick you up and bring you to their rental desk.

4. Traveling to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center:

It is an 18 min Red Line train from Ashmont Station to South Station. Still you have to walk 6-7 minutes to the Ashmont train from the Airbnb and then wait, possibly 9 minutes, between trains-sometimes longer in non-rush hours.

Then, from South Station there are 3 choices but no train to seaport:

1. Silver Line (it’s a bus)
2. Taxi or ride share
3. Walking

So depending on where in seaport it can vary from 5-15 more minutes. You can uber/lyft Into the Convention Center, which is in the middle of Seaport from our Airbnb, costing from anywhere between $10-$30 depending on the time of day and whether you ride in a ride-sharing pool or not.

The average drive time to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (5 miles) is 30 min from here. In conclusion: ride share probably fastest, most comfortable but most expensive. Train is economically and relatively easy to deal with but slower and less convenient.

5. Traveling further within Dorchester:

In our Boston neighborhood, you can also find at the end of Ashmont Station one of the country’s oldest trolley line that continues onward and travels through woodland for about 2 miles to a waterway walk called the Neponset River Waterway (at the “Mattapan” stop). It’s beautiful yet dense family friendly walk over several small bridges.

You can also stop 1 stop sooner on the trolley in “Milton Village” and walk 1/2 mile of a scenic walkway where you then reach views leading to Boston Harbor and it is also connects with the Boston Harborwalk which lasts for 5 miles into Boston’s Italian North End section (and is used by bikers, runners, skateboarders, kayaks, etc)

There is a winery and a restaurant along the way before you reach the University of Massachusetts next to The Kennedy Library. Most major Boston tourist spots are in Boston’s Waterfront areas, the Back Bay and the Seaport District.
