Mechums Cottage is a lovely, light-filled, A-frame cottage with custom concrete countertops and interior designed by the award winning designer and environmentalist, Evelyn Tickle.

The cottage is an 880 sq ft, retreat with 20ft high ceilings, close to historic Monticello & Ash Lawn, 40 vineyards for wine tours, the Appalachian Trial, Blue Ridge Parkway, 3 National Parks, golf courses, multiple rivers to kayak or canoe, and 3 reservoirs for fishing, picnics and paddle boarding.

Mechums Cottage follows Airbnb’s enhanced cleaning protocol, which was developed with expert guidance. Here are a few highlights:

The cottage is sanitized against Covid between guests.I wash all linens on my Bosch washing machine’s Sanitary, extra hot cycle. I ask you to bring a clean sheet to put over the couch, including arms and back while you are here. as this is the only surface that can not be washed.

Mechums Cottage is a unique and spacious (880 sq ft), light-filled, four room private cottage located on my country property 17 minutes outside of Charlottesville and 5 minutes from Crozet. The property includes the main farmhouse and Mechums Cottage with plenty of space between for privacy. It is positioned well for a holiday setting, cozy winter get-away, honeymoon cottage, wedding stay, recreational journey such as skiing/biking/hiking/horseback riding out from the cottage around the beautiful blue ridge mountains, golfing on award-winning nearby courses, or a quiet & cozy get-away for reading or writing. You can enjoy sipping coffee, tea or wine on the very cute front deck with adirondack chairs and flowers, sit around the fire pit and have a great conversation and maybe roast some marshmallows, enjoy the privacy and serenity without being isolated from the amenities of our two towns which have been awarded as top cities to live and visit.

The cottage features concrete countertops and has a full kitchen including plates, cutlery, pots and pans. The cottage is building a collection of paintings and drawings from local artists. Information about each artist and these are purchasable items. The cottage has a sound bar and a HD 36” flatscreen (bring your hdmi accessible laptop for Hulu, Netflix, etc) for your listening pleasure and wifi for your movies, board games and cards and puzzles for hang out time with friends, a farm table for working or dining. The kitchen is spacious for crafting a meal, making cookies or enjoyable for making coffee.

The bedroom is accessed by a full-size internal stairway. The bedroom is open to the living area and is light filled with full height headroom and two closets. It has a queen-size bed with a comfy new mattress and box springs and pillow top, comfy mattress pad and very nice and soft sheets, comforter and six different varieties of pillows. It is more comfortable than my own bed:)

The bathroom is on the main floor and has a full size shower and features top shampoos, conditioners, lotion and body soap and Biltmore towels plus a rainfall shower head.

There are berries vines along the perimeter of the vegetable garden which you are welcome to enjoy. Also, I can recommend down-home or high-brow dining locations in restaurants with award winning chefs. The breweries and vineyards are plentiful with wine makers from France, Italy and Spain. Wintergreen ski resort is about thirty minutes away. Polo on Sundays during the summer at King Family Vineyard is a favorite!

There is a periodic train (a few yimes a week) that runs by the cottage to create an extra ambience (if you are a very sensitive sleeper you might want to bring earplugs just in case and there is also a fan in the closet to provide noise distraction). Otherwise it is incredibly quiet unless you count the bird songs.

Please note, the cottage is in the country even though it is close to many amenities and restaurants. Our territory is quite lovely and natural and with that comes beautiful singing birds, the occasional dear, ladybugs and stink bugs, etc if you leave the door open and cows bring in the distance, once in a while.

The recreation opportunities are abundant from paddling our great rivers or reservoirs, golfing 5 public golf courses, yoga at a variety of studios, hiking the Appalachian Trail, riding horses, biking or running far or short distances, skiing 30 minutes away at Wintergreen, fishing in our many lakes and streams. I can assist you suggestions for routes or lessons for anything you would like to do from cooking lessons to fly fishing lessons or horseback riding lessons. And, the pool is available upon request from mid June - mid August.

Mechums cottage is in an eclectic rural setting dating back to the 1850's, located just minutes between Crozet and Charlottesville. The property was the site of the Mechum's School Marm. Her house is now my house. Other homes are the School House, the General Store, a house used as a Civil War hospital, The Train Depot Hotel, a small worker's house and probably Native American grounds. Each house has plenty of privacy and together forms a respectful and diverse neighborhood that we appreciate and enjoy and hope you do as well:)

Im here working from home on T, Th and teach at the university on MWF. Your stay here at Mechums Cottage can be as private as you like as the cottage is out of ear and eye view for my house and is your own space while you are here. The majority of guests lime to self-checkin. If you would like me to meet you at the cottage to say hi and check you in, I am very happy to do so and please let me know. Otherwise, I will give you instructions for a self checkin prior to your arrival. I’m here for any assistance and am very accessible via text and otherwise will respect your privacy.

If you need anything during your visit please let me know and I will be happy to assist or point you in the right direction. Thankfully, we also have a Harris Teeter grocery store a couple miles away for other things you might need.
