A dónde irás

Punakaiki, West Coast, South Island, Nueva Zelanda

Punakaiki, with its natural wonders and wild coast, is one of the main tourist attractions on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

The Pancake Rocks

Unique in the world, the Pancake Rocks and blowholes are an amazing natural feature made from layers of limestone, which have been sculptured over thousands of years. Resembling stacks of pancakes, the coastal promontory is even more dramatic when high tides and powerful waves shoot sea spray jets up through blowholes.

There is an easy 20-minute walking loop track from the visitor centre and car park to viewpoints for the karst rocks, blowholes and surge pool, with sweeping views of the coast. Pods of dolphins are sometimes spotted off shore, and on some days you can see New Zealand¿s highest mountain, Mt Cook, or Aoraki, in the far distance.

The Department of Conservation loop track and visitor centre is just a short distance - 600m - from Hydrangea Cottages and Punakaiki Horse Treks.

Paparoa National Park and NZ¿s latest Great Walk

As well as the iconic limestone formations, there is more to discover along the coast and inland, with lagoons, rivers, sub-tropical forest, and opportunities for soft adventure including horse treks, canoeing, jade carving, knife making, wagon tours, beach combing, bird watching and hiking and cave exploration.

In 2019 New Zealand¿s latest Great Walk opens, with access next to Hydrangea Cottages and Punakaiki Horse Treks, for day walks, multi-day hikes and mountain biking. Activities include, kayaking, knife making, jade carving, cave rafting, horse and wagon tours, bird watching.

Punakaiki and facilities

Punakaiki is a small coastal settlement, but there are cafes, a restaurant, tavern (pub), and art & craft gallery, all within walking distance. There is no grocery store or shop, no petrol station, and no ATM machine, so be sure to stock up on supplies before you arrive, in Greymouth or Westport, which are under 1 hour drive away.

We are a Kiwi couple who have lived in Punakaiki from the early 1990s, after moving back to family land we have built 7 places to stay surrounded by the Paparoa National park and the Tasman sea. Each place has been built with salvaged and native timber, situated amongst native bush and most offering stunning sea views. Located between the Pancake Rocks and the Punakaiki Lagoon.
