El espacio
Buckhurst Shepherd's hut is ideally suited to couples; however, there is also a bunk bed, above the main double bed, available for a child between the ages of 5 and 10.

Size of the Shepherd's Hut is approx. 24ft x 8ft - it has an open plan living, bedroom and kitchen area, and separate bathroom with shower, WC and sink, with a selection of toiletries provided.

The living area has a double bed with single bunk on top. Fresh linen is provided on arrival; if guests are staying 5 days or longer, we will change the linen half way through the stay, but for shorter stays, we do not disturb guests for linen changes.

The kitchen is fully equipped with comprehensive self-catering facilities including an electric oven and stove, fridge freezer and sink, as well cutlery, crockery, condiments and all the cooking basics guests will require.

We provide a seasonal breakfast hamper including croissants, pain au chocolat, bread, butter, preserves, honey, granola, milk, orange juice, as well as tea and coffee (Nespresso machine), biscuits and fresh fruits. When possible, we try to provide seasonal home grown fruit as we grow fruit on site, such as strawberries, raspberries, apples, blueberries, pears, damsons, plums and tomatoes.

Our breakfast hamper should be sufficient for 2/3 days; we will provide a further hamper (or hampers) for guests staying more than three days. An example of our breakfast hamper for a family of three for a 2/3 day stay is shown in the photos above (subject to change).

As explained below, you have access to most of the 10 acres surrounding Buckhurst. It also contains a private orchard garden area behind the Shepherd's hut, which has a table and seats, as well as a small portable barbecue (we provide utensils and a lighter, but guests will need to bring or acquire their own charcoal, fire lighters and any produce they intend to cook; the barbecue should be used with caution and only on the slab provided away from the Shepherds Hut).

There is a television, which can pick up all terrestrial, Freesat and radio channels, and it has the facility to play the numerous DVDs and CDs which we have provided for guests. There are also board games, cards and books for guests to enjoy.

The property is all electric (no gas), including the heating, which is amply provided through a log-effect fire in the living area and a large radiator in the bathroom.

Our welcome pack provides details of the numerous local pubs and restaurants, if you want to dine or drink out; and lots of information about local tourist attractions and public transport (see the "Guest Access" and "the neighbourhood" sections below for further details).

Wifi is provided by an extender from the main house - this provides basic Wifi connection due to the connection through the extender, but we are looking to hardwire this for summer 2020. 3G/4G should also be available on most networks.

There is ample free guest parking on site (Vehicles and Contents Left at Owner's Risk)

Acceso de los huéspedes
Whilst Buckhurst provides a perfect base for exploring the Kent Coast, Romney Marsh, the East Kent Countryside and many attractions in the county, it also provides direct access to most of the surrounding 10 acres. This includes a stream which runs through our land as well as a public footpath which crosses the grounds and provides scenic walks into the yonder of the Kent countryside. Walking sticks, umbrellas and torches are provided for the convenience and comfort of guests.

As summarised in the "the neighbourhood" section below, our welcome pack, which we will provide to guests before arrival, provides ample details of the many local pubs and restaurants, shops, amenities, public transport, walks and tourist attractions including: Port Lympne Safari Park (3 miles away) ; the historic Cinque Port of Hythe with its Military Canal, and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (4.5 miles away); Ashford with its Designer Outlet and Curious Brewery (5 miles away); Dymchurch Beach and Amusement Park (7 miles away); Folkestone with its refurbished Harbour Arm and Old Town and Sunny Sands Beach (8 miles away); Dover with its Port and Castle (15 miles away); the historic Cinque Port of Rye with its famous Mermaid Inn, Ypres Castle and nearby Camber Sands Beach and Dunes (15 miles away); Tenterden with its medieval High Street, Market, Heritage Steam Railway, Chapel Down Winery and Rare Breeds Centre (15 miles away); Canterbury with its famous Cathedral, and Wingham and Howletts Wildlife Parks (15 miles away); Leeds Castle, Historic Rochester with its Castle and Cathedral, and Chatham Historic Dockyard (20-25 miles away).

Places to eat and drink...

While the Shepherd's Hut has full and comprehensive provisions for guests to cater for themselves, we are pleased to recommend some of the best (and our favourite) places to eat and drink locally - both in the local villages, within a mile or so from the Shepherd's Hut, or in our local towns of Hythe, Folkestone and Ashford. There are dozens of excellent pubs and restaurants in our locals villages and towns. Our welcome pack lists our recommendations, along with providing directions, contact numbers and websites.

Tourist attraction and places to visit...

Our welcome pack also lists many tourist attractions both local to the Shepherd's Hut and elsewhere in Kent.

These include amongst others:

Port Lympme Safari Park (Approx 3 miles away)

Hythe (Approx 4.5 miles away)
Ancient Cinque Port, coastal/seaside town with medieval high street, the famous Royal Military Canal and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway narrow gauge heritage steam train line to Dymchurch, New Romney and Dungeness

Tenterden (Approx 15 miles away)
Medieval High Street with art, craft and antiques shops, market and the Old Dairy Brewery in the Town Centre along with a standard gauge heritage steam railway with trains to Northiam and Bodiam (including Bodiam Castle). Nearby is the Chapel Down vineyard, winery, distillery and brewery and the Rare Breeds Centre wildlife park

Romney Marsh:
- Dymchurch beach and amusement park (Approx 8 miles away)
- Dungeness (Approx 15 miles away):
With Britain’s only desert, the largest expanse of shingle in the world, famous lighthouses, the RNLI museum and a large RSPB bird and nature reserve

- Rye, East Sussex (About 18 miles away)
Historic medieval cobbled citadel, 14th Century Ypres Tower, 900 year-old St Mary’s Church with its 84-step tower offering the best views of Rye, and the famous Grade II listed 12th Century "haunted" Mermaid Inn, with purportedly the largest inglenook in the country over its huge open log fire.

Ashford (6 miles away):
With its Mcarthur Glen Factory Outlet Store – well priced designer clothes and goods, Curious Brewery, Ashford and Willesborough Windmill

Folkestone (8 miles away):
With its Sunny Sands Beach, Folkestone Harbour Arm – promenade with restaurants, cafes and bars on refurbished harbour and station, Folkestone Old Town and Creative Quarter, and Samphire Hoe Nature Reserve

Dover (approx. 15 miles away):
With Dover Castle, Dover Port and Harbour, and famous White Cliffs of Dover

Canterbury area (approx. 15 miles away):
With Canterbury Cathedral, the Canterbury Tales Museum and Kent County Cricket Club in the City, and nearby Wingham Wildlife Park, Howletts Wildlife Park and Shepherd Neame Brewery

Maidstone and Medway (approx. 20 to 25 miles away)
With Leeds Castle, Mote Park, Chatham Historic Dockyard, Rochester Castle, Rochester Cathedral and Gillingham Football Club

Local shops...

You will find a large array of shops and supermarkets in our local towns – Ashford, Hythe and Folkestone. However, there are more closely located shops available for your convenience, as follows:

The Co-Op, Sellindge (1.5 miles away), a small but well stocked small supermarket
with a post office, cash withdrawal facilities and a car park.

Costcutters (formerly Spar), Brabourne Lees (1 mile away), another small but well stocked small supermarket with a post office and cash withdrawal facilities.

Potten Farm Shop, Sellindge (0.75 miles away), an independent farm shop, which includes a greengrocers and nursery, selling local products such as jams, chutneys, Simply Ice Cream from Bonnington and Korkers Sausages from Rolvenden.

Tesco Crooksfoot, Hythe Road (A20), Willesborough (3.5 miles away), the largest
shop locally – a large supermarket selling a wide range of products as you would
expect from a Tesco Extra Superstore, pharmacy, a petrol station and "Click and Collect" option (open 24 hours a day, except Sundays).

Cash machines/ATMs or post office/cash back facilities can be found at all of the above shops (apart from Potten Farm) as well as in our local towns of Hythe and Ashford, where banking facilities and most High Street banks can be found.
