Our family cottage is a charming, white-washed fisherman’s cottage in Porthleven, West Cornwall. It dates from the 1830’s and is just two-minutes-walk from the harbour. The cottage has two wood-stoves, original artworks from Cornish artists and a pretty garden with exotic Cornish plants and a picnic bench. It is positioned in the heart of Porthleven, a traditional fishing port, with a lively and welcoming community.

El espacio
Dai Mar cottage retains original features, giving it character and charm. The lounge, which gets the morning/early afternoon sun, has a wood-fired stove, stable door and a window seat; the kitchen has a raw stone wall, an original granite fireplace and an eco wood-fired stove, and the upstairs bedroom has a window seat.
It's the extra little touches that gives the cottage its welcoming quirkiness: the wrought-iron fork for toasting crumpets over the fire, the chestnut pan for roasting chestnuts in winter, the contemporary oak rocking chair for sitting by the front window - and the sunny, secluded garden (planted by my mum) with its triffid-like Cornish plants.
Our cottage also has modern-day comforts: the kitchen is fully equipped with oven, grill, microwave and fridge/freezer, as well as a full range of cooking utensils; the lounge has a 32 inch Frame television by Samsung and an Evoke radio/bluetooth speaker for streaming music.
All the rooms are heated with eco-heating panels and there is a new washer-dryer in an outhouse for guests to use.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has a queen-sized bed, hand-made in solid ash by the Natural Bed Company in Sheffield. The zipped queen-sized mattress is made by Vi-Spring, which has a Queen's Award for their English craftsmanship (it has 'soft' tension on one side and 'medium' tension on the other). The duvet is cloud-light, the sheets made from crisp white Egyptian 200-thread-count sheets, and there is a hand-woven woollen blanket, made in the UK. There are bespoke fitted wardrobes.
The master bedroom catches the morning sun, until the early afternoon.
The second bedroom has a solid oak single bed, hand-crafted in East London, with roller-drawers for storage. It has a Vi-Spring mattress in a 'medium' tension and a duck-egg blue merino wool blanket. There is also a bench seat, small chest of drawers, a reading lamp and original artwork.
The bathroom has a bath and shower, luxury towels and candles for those who like candle-lit baths.
There is also a grab bar for the bath/shower.
For guests wishing to work at their computers, there is an elegant table in the master bedroom which doubles as a desk, strong BT WiFi and day-light study lamps.
I have tried to ensure that nearly everything in the cottage, from the furniture, fabrics, linens and wood stoves, to the crockery, cutlery and chestnut pan, is made in England and designed to last, to support the work of craftsmen and women in the UK. All the glasswork and original art are from Cornish artists.
The cottage has a strong BT internet connection.

You may have noticed that our cottage is modestly priced compared with other cottages of a similar size in Porthleven. We have had problems with our chimney, not helped by the heavy rains over the summer, which has meant that a one meter squared patch of the kitchen wall, next to the chimney, has become discoloured/unsightly, as has a second patch on the other side of the chimney breast. I have temporarily lowered the price for guests, in recognition of this imperfection.

A dónde irás

Porthleven, Inglaterra, Reino Unido

Porthleven is Britain's most southerly fishing port; it has its own harbour, pier, beach, pasty shop, choir and brass band.
It also has an array of independent cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops.
Down at the harbour-front there are always activities to enjoy in summer: gig rowing races, Punch and Judy puppet shows, live bands and barbeques, beer tent. Crab fishing amongst local children is a popular evening pastime.
The town’s brass band performs on the harbour-front every Sunday evening throughout summer. There is an annual gig regatta day, cricket club fetes and village shows.
Autumn and winter are pretty too, with roaring fires at the pubs, Christmas markets, Christmas lights, brass band concerts and carol singing.
Fun things to do in Porthleven:
• Hire a kayak for a sea safari;
• Head out for a spectacular Cornish cliff walk;
• Go fishing in a traditional fishing boat, all fishing gear included;
• Forage in Porthleven’s rock-pools for baby crabs, exotic marine plants and seaweed;
• Enjoy a Cornish beer at one of the harbour’s three sea-view pubs, two of which host live music;
• Swim in the sea;
• Try your hand at bucket/net crab fishing down at the harbour wall – kids love it;
• Take a class in Paddle-boarding;
• Surf Porthleven’s reef break waves: they’re amongst the best in Cornwall;
• Take your pick from Porthleven’s many cafes and restaurants, including Michelin awarded Kota, Seadrift, The Harbourside Refuge, Naughty but Ice and the Twisted Current tearoom for homemade cakes;
• Visit Porthleven’s market stalls and independent boutiques for hand-crafted jewellery, pottery, willow-woven baskets, tailored hats, paintings, slate carvings and surfing photography;
• Sip a cocktail from Kota Kai, served on the lawn cushions on the harbour-front;
• Lie on Porthleven’s beach and listen to the seagulls and the sound of the waves;
• Treat the family to an afternoon tea, with freshly baked scones and Cornish clotted cream.
• Or find yourself a bench with a view of the ocean and enjoy a picnic of wood-fired pizza and a bottle of wine from the deli, a Cornish pasty made from the specialist Cornish pasty shop or just a simple ice-cream.

Hi, I'm a journalist, wife and mother-of-one who lives in North London in a two bedroom flat. My husband is also a journalist. As a family we enjoy walking, drawing, magic, marble runs - and visiting our fishing cottage in Porthleven which has been in our family for 30 years. Come and stay. I’ll do my best to ensure you have a happy and comfortable break. Best wishes, Esther

Durante tu estadía

The cottage has a kind and attentive caretaker who lives two minutes walk away. The caretaker will be happy to help if any issues arise. I live in London but am available by mobile phone, usually within half an hour. Text is best.
