The Burrows is a self-contained garden flat tucked away on a quiet back road in the heart of central Buxton. It has its own private entrance and sunken garden (five steps down) with one off-road parking space for a medium-sized car. A deceptively spacious bolthole the flat has one large bedroom with a kingsize sleigh bed, a bathroom with bath and shower, a library and study area, a light and airy living room, and a recently upgraded kitchen. There is central heating and WiFi throughout the flat.

Since the Burrows is my home and not an otherwise empty Airbnb property it is filled with unusual and interesting vintage items that have been gathered by me and my family over several generations. A fascinating selection of original 1970s board games and puzzles, vinyl records plus a retro player, vintage 78s and an original gramophone, a well stocked personal library of books, another of DVDs, walls of original art and assorted cabinets of curiosity are all part of a stay at The Burrows. Farrow & Ball colours and real wood floors throughout the flat create somewhere pleasant and comfortable to truly switch off and relax. Of course many of the benefits of the modern world are present as well should you wish to use them such as a 42" Sony Bravia Freeview HD TV, a Roberts Rambler BT DAB/DAB+/FM bluetooth digital radio, and fast and reliable TalkTalk fibre broadband WiFi strong enough for Zoom and other WFH requirements.

The Victorian styled bedroom has a large dark wood sleigh bed with a supportive and very comfortable pocket sprung mattress made in Yorkshire from natural and organic source materials. The pillows and duvet are feather and down and both the bedding and bathroom towels are 100% cotton. Each bedside table has an Anglepoise reading lamp and plenty of plug sockets. Also at your disposal are a large (empty) double wardrobe, ironing board and iron, hairdryer and a vintage FM Roberts radio. This part of the flat is nestled in the basement of the main building and the thick stone walls provide plenty of soundproofing to enable a peaceful and silent night of undisturbed sleep.

The chrome and white bathroom has a full size double ended bathtub, shower mixer tap, separate overhead rainfall shower, sink, toilet, heated towel rail and underfloor heating. The ceiling is a little low in here but I’m 6’3” and manage to take a shower easy enough. Luxury cotton towels and bathrobes are provided but please bring your own swimming towels and pet towels if you think you are going to be needing them.

The extra width hallway has been modified to host a library wall of shelves and you’re very welcome to browse my selection of books including plenty of original comic annuals from the 1960-80s. Over the years I have gathered many factual information books covering everything from British wildlife and Derbyshire walks to local history and interesting places to visit further afield. There is also a charming old desk to set up a laptop or to sit down and write a postcard!

The living room has a large double window and is well lit with natural light during the day. There are plenty of home entertainment opportunities from watching TV and DVDs to listening to records and cassettes. I have an amazing range of original board games and jigsaws saved from my 1970s childhood plus an acoustic guitar for those who play. For a touch of romantic old-fashioned glamour there is an original wind up gramophone and lots of 78s to discover.

The recently upgraded kitchen has an extensive range of appliances including a Stoves range cooker, slimline dishwasher, Indesit washer/dryer, Panasonic microwave, Dualit kettle and toaster, and a new fridge/freezer complete with integral water dispenser for a refreshing glass of chilled Buxton spring water. Simply take an empty water bottle to St Ann’s Well at the crescent and fill up - for free - and chill. Plenty of vintage mix & match crockery, cutlery, utensils and glassware (see photos) are available to use during your stay. For most lettings I'll not be emptying the larders so if you need to use a bit of cooking oil or herbs and spices, or add a dollop of ketchup to your meal, then they are available. For all other kitchen cupboard and fridge freezer consumables (rice, pasta, tins, frozen peas, etc) I'll operate an 'honesty bar' whereby if you do run out and need to borrow anything then simply replace it before you leave.

The Burrows is pet friendly and therefore not appropriate for those with pet hair allergies. There is a maximum of ONE well-behaved small/medium dog allowed and the standard rental rules of no animals on the furniture or in the bathtub apply. Please remember that this property has personal items in all rooms which might include wires and cables and it would therefore not be suitable for puppies.

Outside there is a small sunken garden with a patio table and chairs, a pair of wooden sun loungers, a planter of homegrown herbs to use in the kitchen, and an outdoor tap with a hose attached for washing down dirty boots and dogs. Please be aware that there are five slightly uneven steps down to the garden but there is a sturdy handrail to assist you. There is private parking for one medium-sized car that requires a modicum of reverse parking skill and there is plenty of free street parking for larger vehicles a 5-10 minute walk away. For cyclists I would prefer that bikes were kept outside of the flat.

All in all a stay at The Burrows is a true "home from home" experience and is best appreciated over a week or more but it is equally very easy to settle in quickly for even the shortest of stays. I have, however, set a two night minimum to avoid having to make too many trips to the laundry! A weekly rate discount of 10% is applied automatically and I welcome longer term stays for anything up to a month (20% discount) through Airbnb. Please message me for trusted home swaps and longer stays.

My place is not going to be for everyone and if you are looking for a rental that resembles a hotel room or furniture store showroom then I’d recommend that you probably look elsewhere. Please study the photos carefully and be fully aware of what is on offer as I have tried to be as transparent as possible in this listing. For the right people The Burrows is a dream come true!!

The HOUSE RULES are simple : treat my home as you would yours. A maximum of two overnight adult guests allowed - extra day visitors are more than welcome but strictly no further overnight guests. No smoking indoors. No pets on furniture or in the bathtub. No muddy boots or bicycles inside. Thanks.

The Burrows is located in the Central Buxton ward and you are not very far away from most of what Buxton has to offer. A short 5 minute walk in one direction takes you to the Pavilion Gardens with a boating lake, miniature train, bandstand, mature trees and attractive planting, a stream, and many grassy areas that are popular with locals and tourists alike for picnics in the summer. Buxton Swimming and Fitness Centre, the Pavilion and Pavilion Arts Centre, the Winter Garden, and the stunning Opera House are all adjacent to the gardens. A slightly longer 5-10 minute walk in the other direction brings you to Market Square (market days are Tuesdays and Saturdays) with a Post Office, quirky cafés and bars, independent shops, takeaways, pubs, etc. Another 5 minute walk down the hill and you’re in the heart of downtown Buxton. For those seeking a hit of instant countryside a 10-15 minute walk in yet another direction will get you to Grin Low Woods were you can then walk up to the charming Victorian folly Solomon’s Temple and look down over the whole of Buxton.

Please note that I will therefore only be able to accept bookings for arrivals after 10:00 and before 16:00 to allow this to work and will not be able to hand over keys in the evening. During your stay you are always welcome to contact me between 9am-6pm for any reason but please only contact me outside of these hours for emergencies. I would prefer departures to be made by midday at the latest but later check out can be arranged on request.
