Quiet Beauty & Big Skies at El Rito Lodge

Nestled between El Rito Creek and the Kit Carson National Forest, this 3000 sq ft country retreat is close to Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, and Ojo Caliente, and has a working dobsonian telescope on 6+ wild acres. **** Please note: Our home sleeps a total of 8, and there is an additional charge of $25/guest/night for more than 2 guests. ****

>> COVID-19 Update: Please read the NM Department of Health site for latest traveler restrictions at cv.nmhealth.org <<

El espacio
Tranquil. Spiritual. Secluded. Wild. Just 1 hour to Santa Fe and Taos and 20 min to Chimayo, Ghost Ranch and Ojo Caliente Hot Springs. El Rito Lodge is a peaceful retreat from the noise and stress of everyday life. You can get away from it all without being too far away - we've got wifi, cable and reliable cell phone service. Sit by the clear mountain streams burbling in the front yard, walk among the Pinon, juniper and sagebrush, let the bright blue skies, and starry nights soothe your overloaded senses.

Acceso de los huéspedes
**** Please be sure to indicate your total # of guests with your reservation and make any changes BEFORE the day of your arrival ****

Guests have use of the entire house and 8" Dobsonian telescope. The grounds are free for wandering. Nature runs free here - deer, raccoons, rabbits and the occasional black bear. There's cholla, prickly pear, yucca, and piñon. El Rito Creek that babbles along the front yard provides a haven for the local wildlife.

>> COVID-19 Update: Observatory star tours currently unavailable due to social distancing rules. Outdoor star tours may be available by reservation with Colin (number below). Face masks must be worn and availability of star tours depend on local covid regulations. <<
The roll-off roof observatory is available for guest use with a guided star tour to be reserved separately through Colin Nicholls, colin@newmex.com, 575-613-5649. For $200, he will provide a guided tour of the skies. The celestron telescope is a large, complex system that requires expertise to use and we ask that guests use the portable 8" Dobsonian scope instead. The pier-mounted Celestron CGEM 1100 has
- a Canon-camera mount,
- a Telrad,
- a finder scope
- a fcusb from shoestring astronomy
- a motofocus,
- a Celestron off-axis guider with various adapters
- a selection of 2 inch eye pieces (40, 32, 26 and 18mm) and filters (including variable-polarizing and narrowband o-iii filters.) It is powered by a small solar array with DC and AC outputs (12-volt).

There is an 8" Dobsonian telescope available for all guests to use. It is a point, focus and gaze telescope. Just be sure to follow instructions and store it exactly as you found it.

We measured the SQM on 19 May 2017 at 10 pm at 21.75.

For more information on our location, we are at 170 NM-110, El Rito, New Mexico 87530.

The right-of-way to the house has a sharp turn, that limits trailers to 20' in length.

Otros aspectos a destacar
The price of the house includes up to 2 guests. An additional 6 guests can stay for $25/guest/night (price charged for adult guests age 16+). Thank you for letting us know the number of people in your reservation before your arrival date. We do not charge for guests under 16.

Ubicación

El Rito, Nuevo México, Estados Unidos

The village of El Rito is in the rugged high desert country of northern New Mexico. One of the first Spanish settlements in the area, the oldest church in New Mexico is here. Home to artists, photographers, ranchers and farmers, El Rito has that quirky New Mexico vibe.

Carson National Forest - borders 2 sides of our backyard. Many acres of barely-explored trails and spectacular rock climbing spots.

El Faralito Restaurant - our local and wonderful folksy eatery (please don't expect fast service). We recommend their green chili cheeseburgers, huevos rancheros with green and red chile (Christmas), and their must-have sopaipillas with honey.

Plaza Blanca Ranch - These spectacular white-rock badlands were painted by Georgia O'Keeffe. Plaza Blanca was also the location of the alien ship in "Cowboys and Aliens"

Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat center - Georgia O'Keeffe lived in a small house on the property and painted here. You can camp out, meditate, yoga, paint or take classes.

Bode's General Store - Groceries and camping supplies. Lunches are also served. Recommended: the green chile burgers.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Baths and Spa - A wonderful place to spa and relax. Several natural mineral hot springs. Get a fantastic massage. Enjoy good food at Artesian restaurant, which combines local flavors with global cuisine.

Sanctuario de Chimayo - in the small town of Chimayo is the famous sanctuary pilgrims visit for its healing dirt as well as Rancho de Chimayo, another great restaurant.
