Roma, Lazio, Italia

The EUR (Esposizione Universale di Roma) is one of the most elegant neighborhoods of Rome. Architectural jewel of the Fascist period, it expressed the regime's desire to celebrate and glorify imperialist ideas of the country. The project, directly supported by Benito Mussolini, was to be realized within the Rome's Universal Exposition of 1942 which provided for the construction of a large urban area with imposing buildings, urban infrastructures, public services and green areas, connected to the city center (Piazza Venezia ) from the Via Cristoforo Colombo. The challenging project was never carried to term, but even today, although deeply modified to be adapted to the new needs of the city, the EUR looks like one of the most interesting areas of modern Rome.
The splendid and rigorous buildings created by the genius of great architects such Piacentini, Rossi and Vietti stand out among the greenery and are a unique example that testifies the artistic and architectural trends of the first half of the twentieth century in Italy and in Rome. The United Nations square constitutes a kind of triumphal entry into the neighborhood. The semicircular structure is animated by pillared porticoes and impressive fountains and it is inspired to the classic idea of the magnificent and severe Roman architecture of Trajan's Market (II sec. D.C).
From there, two broad avenues lead to the Congress Palace and to the Palace of Civilization and Labour. The latter, commonly called "Square Colosseum", can be considered among the most representative buildings of the fascist period. The solid structure, in fact, is animated and made lighter, according to the artistic lines of the time, by orders of round arches. Imposing marble statues of Castor and Pollux stand on the base while austere fascist warnings are impressed along the walls of the building.
Glimpses of great suggestion surprise then the visitor along the avenues of Museums (National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions and National Museum Pigorini) crowned by the stele in honor of Guglielmo Marconi. Large green areas and fountains surround the artificial lake (Laghetto) dominated by the Palazzo dello Sport – today Palalottomatica – by Nervi and Piacentini, authentic architectural jewel. Finally, the church of SS. Peter and Paul (Foschini) stands on an artificial hill, dominatingm the animated shopping street (Viale Europa) with a thousand lights. The church, with its simple and austere forms, is of great importance and conceived as a visual and conceptual reference point for the entire district. Inside it contains fine works of Duilio Cambellotti. The EUR is now increasingly an area in the future, in step with the world's great metropolises, in which the aspects of life and work are integrated and interact perfectly with each other.
To spend a pleasant day, tourists can visit the Museum of Roman Civilization where the secrets of the Ancient Rome can be discovered, admiring the plastic reconstruction of the city in the age of Constantine.
For those who love astronomy it is indispensable the visit to the Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, located in the same building that hosts the Museum of Roman Civilization. The Planetarium also offers the shows created especially for the little ones to discover the secrets of space.
Another place to visit is the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions which hosts a large collection of objects from the traditional Italian culture from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, including costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, artifacts, paintings and nativity scenes.
The National Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography Luigi Pigorini allows the visitors to learn more on ethnography and prehistory.
Finally, the Historical Museum of Postal and Telecommunications illustrates the history and development of the postal service and hosts a rich philatelic collection.
