Island
“Margaret Island is a 2.5 km long island, 500 metres wide, in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious centre. The island spans the area between the Margaret Bridge and the Árpád Bridge. Before the 14th century the island was called Insula leporum. Administratively Margaret Island used to belong to the 13th district, but now is directly under the control of the city. Its appearance today was developed through the connection of three separate islands, the Festő, the Fürdő and the Nyulak, during the end of the 19th century, to control the flow of the Danube. Originally, the island was 102.5 metres above sea level, but now has been built up to 104.85 metres above sea level to control flooding.”

Outdoor Sculpture
“A heartbreaking memorial to 3,500 people killed by fascists in Budapest during the Second World War. This poignant sculpture, made up of 60 pairs of cast iron shoes designed by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer on the banks of the Danube, commemorates the slaying of 3,500 civilians – including 800 Jews – killed by Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest. The victims were ordered to remove their shoes by the fascist group, before being shot, their dead bodies falling into the river.”

“It’s classic but in another sense than the Great Market Hall. It’s open-air and the goods are spread out in front of your eyes. It’s run-down in a romantic way and could very much be the smallest in the capital. Small as in cute. The original spirit of markets, that of the contact between buyer and merchant, the real, uncorrupted farmer comes into being. ”

“Bauhaus – an architectural style named after a German art school of the same name – was a big hit in Budapest, with many residential buildings, cinemas and churches built in the style. It was popular between 1930 and 1948 and its buildings can mostly be seen in the Újlipótváros neighborhood, as well as in Szent István Park, and on Margit Körút.”

Mirador
“A spot frequented by denizens of Budapest in the Buda hills, Normafa is known for its panoramic scenery and fresh air. It is located on Svábhegy and is close to Jánoshegy, the highest point in Budapest. The name is derived from the name of a tree, the "Norma tree." Allegedly the beech tree was planted by King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century. The name stuck when performers from the Hungarian National Theater visited it, where they performed Vincenzo Bellini's Norma.”
