Food Scene

Delicious, truly world-class pizza, inexpensive, made fresh in a wood-fired oven by the side of the road. Cannot recommend enough. Start with a Margarita with fresh tomatoes on top and you will not be disappointed. Only open Thursday to Saturday. Order early by phone at peak times.

The best coffee house by far. (Drive to State Street, turn right, follow the road around the bend. You will see it a few miles up on your left, you can't miss it.) Make sure you see the stunning patio. They also make fresh sandwiches.

Stunning, unique scenery, moderate to strenuous hiking trails. We recommend you drive there using the route that takes you through Zion. (Take State Route 9 through Zion to Route 89; turn left; when you reach Route 12, turn right. This is a very picturesque road trip but make sure you have fuel as there are few gas stations once you pass Springdale (just before Zion), until you reach Bryce. There are few options for food near Bryce but there is a great Subway standing by itself a few miles before you reach Bryce Canyon City (it’s not a real city). In the evening, there is a decent diner restaurant attached to the hotel in Bryce Canyon City (on the right as you arrive, on your left when you leave the park; again, difficult to miss as there are few buildings). There is an alternative return journey that is slightly longer but the roads are faster, albeit less picturesque, and there is some highway driving which is much easier than the route through Zion, especially after a long day hiking, in the dark or in bad weather (when Zion can sometimes be impassible if there is snow). Leave Bryce the way you came in on Route 12. When you reach the junction with Route 89, turn right (signed to Panguitch/Route 20/Route 95) and thereafter follow signs to I-95. When you reach the highway, turn South.

One of the most stunning parks. However long you spend there, you cannot get bored. Some gentle walks in the valley floor plus countless moderate, strenuous and advanced hiking trails. Not to be missed. Best to get there early in the day, especially at peak times. Don't miss the drive through the park (after you enter the park, instead of bearing left at the fork to go to the main valley (which is the route the trams take), keep right; the road has many switchbacks and a couple of tunnels but it is well worth it, with several places to stop off for views and hiking).

Entertainment & Activities

The closest ski resort is Brian Head, less than 90 minutes north, most of the journey on I-15. Equipment can be rented there. Not somewhere you would want to spend a week but great for a day or two with enough runs for all skill levels.

Arts & Culture

There is a stunning outdoor theater in Ivins, near St. George. www.tuacahn.org. Highly recommended just to see it, regardless of what they are showing. They typically put on three broadway musicals each summer and also host a variety of other concerts.
