Parks & Nature

Our favorite is a 3.5 mile hike we call "the loop" Starting at the North Beach parking lot, walk along the beach (not at high tide!) turning inland when you get to the campground. At the far end of the campground look for the trail cutting into the woods. Follow it up the cliff, and stay to the right and make your way back past ww1 bunkers and great views of the Strait

A mercurial sort of place, it can be chilly and socked in with heavy fog when you arrive, and broiling in a cloudless sky a couple of hours later. Dress accordingly.

Personally, I like the clamming at the Western end of the park, it's directly across from Port Townsend, and gives you the perspective from the water without leaving terra firma. My family, however prefers hiking along the beach on the Eastern side. Lots of hiking with great water views.

Everything Else

There are tons of cool shops in town. Antiques of every flavor, art, kitch, jewelry, DIY kayak kits! You could easily spend the day shopping and walking around Port Townsend, and come away with everything from handmade paintbrushes to a 1940 Lincoln Continental. The Farmers Market is awesome!

Essentials

This is comparable to sophisticated big city food coops, with a cafe and a wide variety of wholesome foods. There is a "Salmon Cart" on the weekends which produces the most crazy delicious sandwiches I've ever encountered. (Fried egg on your salmon sandwich? Yes please!) It is possible to stop in to quickly grab a couple of items, and inexplicably still be there 2 hours later, discussing the merits of the Chinese Junk rig your new found friend just added to her 1979 Catalina 27'.
