Bunker Restaurant in Bangkok, set in a cool 3-storey building in Sathorn, serves refined cuisine, picking dishes from across the culinary traditions of Europe with the addition of some American bravado. Their belief in strong flavours is apparent throughout the menu: salads are served earthy and partially raw, the cured foie gras is especially creamy, the pasta is rich and filling.

Eat Me. The name is less of a suggestion and more a promise of something irresistible. This gallery and restaurant on Soi Convent in Silom lives up to its name by serving mouthwatering modern international food, good drinks and some very tasty desserts.

Jok is Thailand’s version of rice porridge, surely the most humble dish it is possible to find in the land of strong herbs and biting spices. Typically, this dish is served in food courts and street stalls for around 30 baht (US$1). But for our money, the very best rice porridge in Bangkok can be found at Jok Prince, a narrow restaurant set up in Bang Rak, close to Sapan Taksin BTS Skytrain Station. It's hard to find for foreign guests due to the lack of English signage, but it just adds to the authenticity and adventure.

Thip Samai Pad Thai should be on everyone’s list of the best local restaurants in Bangkok. Commonly known as Ghost Gate (Pratu Pee), it's widely considered to serve the best pad Thai in Bangkok, which pretty much makes it the best in the world. Ingredients are incredibly fresh, portions are filling and, as it is cooked on charcoal at high heat, it's served moist but not at all oily. Plus, the sight of the row of woks being tossed over flames is a classic snapshot of Bangkok food culture.

If you want to drink and dance with the locals, then one of the best places to go near the Siam area of Bangkok is Coco Walk, outside exit 2 of Ratchathewi station. There’s a whole range of different bars, pubs and live music venues here, and it's a great place to grab a good value dinner before listening to a great variety of music, from cover bands to Thai rock.

Packing all the splendour of the Land of Smiles into an 80-minute stage show is no easy task. But Siam Niramit succeeds – and spectacularly. How so? Try the world’s biggest stage, a cast of hundreds, and bags of Thai finesse. The first act describes how Siam became a crossroads where civilisations met, the second how karma binds the Thai people, the last how religious ceremony earns Thais merit in this life.

Chang Chui Bangkok Plane Night Market takes Bangkok night markets to ‘new heights’. You'll find a nice selection of shopping and dining here, combined with modern, urban and often wacky art pieces, much of it made from recycled and scrap materials. The concept behind the night market is that ‘nothing is useless’ and we’re confident you’ll be deeply impressed by what the artists have managed to create.

Artbox Bangkok, also called Artboxthailand, is a trendy outdoor market in Chuvit Garden. Located between the Asok and Nana BTS Skytrain stations, most stalls occupy giant metal shipping containers, while picnic tables and benches are scattered throughout the park. You won’t find tacky tourist souvenirs at this open-air market, but youthful fashion and handmade accessories by local designers. Artbox Bangkok often hosts live music in the evenings, resulting in a rather laidback atmosphere.
