Guide to Mexico City

Neighborhoods
Colorful Roma is the hipster heart of Mexico City. Just west of Centro Historico and hugging the eastern edge of the Condesa neighborhood, Roma is the perfect place to stay in if you’re looking to shop at cute boutiques, sip incredibly good coffee, and enjoy close proximity to many of Mexico City’s biggest attractions. Originally a neighborhood for Mexico City’s upper-class, Roma fell on hard times after the 1985 earthquake. Happily, the neighborhood has enjoyed a recent renaissance—locals love Roma’s combination of art deco mansions, colorful street art, and, of course, the neighborhood’s hipster vibe. Most of Mexico City is safe, and Roma is considered one of the safest neighborhoods in town.

Mexico City’s historic centre, known as the centro histórico or centro, is the heart of the Mexican capital and one of the spots that all first-time visitors to Mexico City should aim to explore, even if just for a day. Having said that, there’s more than enough going on in the historic centre to warrant staying far longer.

Coyoacan, a former village and now one of the 16 boroughs of Mexico City, is a historic center. It is a popular place to visit, especially on weekends, because many of the original layouts, plazas and narrow streets have been preserved and date from the 16th to the early 20th centuries.

The Soumaya Museum contains the Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s private collection of art, sculpture and other items. Painters such as Picasso, Renoir, Dali, Van Gogh and many notable Mexican artists feature in the exhibition. The collection of over 66,000 pieces has been split into two buildings due to the sheer quantity of items; one in Plaza Loreto which is itself a stunning piece of modern architecture, and the other in Plaza Carso.

The Museum of Anthropology is the most visited museum in the country, containing one of the world’s largest collections of Mayan artifacts, from pre-Columbian Mexico and pre-Hispanic civilizations up to the time of the Spanish conquest. The museum is located in a building designed by Pedro Ramirez Vazquez in 1963; a piece of architectural artwork itself. A single column supports the renowned umbrella roof, symbolizing the three important pre-Hispanic symbols of a mythological tree, eagles and jaguars.

Quintonil is the name of a green Mexican herb which features in some of the dishes and cocktails, and pretty much sums up this restaurant: fresh, authentic and brimming with flavour. Chef Jorge Vallejo’s menu is based on local produce and showcases the best of Mexico.

Located in Jardines del Pedregal, an elegant suburb on the outskirts of the city, Tetetlán is worth the trip. Originally the horse stables of a home designed by Mexico’s most influential architect, Luis Barragán, the space was recently restored by an art collector who lives next door. It is many things: a café serving shade-grown local coffee, a showcase for local designers, a restaurant serving creative Mesoamerican dishes, a yoga studio, a hotel for visiting artists who are asked to donate a book to Tetetlán’s extensive collection, and a listening library. But it’s the space’s design that’s truly breathtaking: glass floors look down on the area’s local purple-black volcanic rock, and the sun pouring in from skylights is warmed by rafters painted in Barragán’s signature pink.
