Exotic rocky beaches

Here I list the best "exotic" beaches of the French Riviera, meaning those that are natural and have exceptional surroundings. However, most of them are rocky and often require a bit of walk to access. To get a much more detailed information about these places, including parkings and accesses, check my full guide for which I sent you the link in the messages.
This is the most beautiful beach of the French Riviera. It has 2 sides: a sandy one with amenities like bathrooms, snack, restaurant, etc. and a rocky one which is completely wild. However, watch out, even the "sandy" part is actually pebbles inside the water. So although the beach itself is sand, the water access is not very pleasant because of the pebbles. Access: - By car paid parking: you can park in center of Theoule and walk along the Promenade Andre Pradayrol, but the parking is paid during the season. From here you can only access the sandy part of the beach. - By car free parking: you can drive on the road above this beach and park along it for free (just watch out, cars drive fast). Also, there is a dedicated parking of "Pointe de l'Aiguille" but it's pretty filled during the season. There you can go down a short path until either the sandy part or the rocky part of the beach. The views will be breathtaking! However the walk up can be a bit tiring if you're not used. - By boat: there is a very convenient boat shuttle between the ports of Cannes, Mandelieu, Theoule and the Esterel. It offers a day pass. If you are staying in Cannes, you can take it from the port and it will bring you directly to the place where the main walk to reach this beach starts.

There is an abundance of extremely beautiful coves all along the Esterel, but the one called Saint Barthélémy is my favorite. Is has several little islands next to it and a sea cave that you can swim to. It's ideal for snorkeling. There is a parking next to the road but it can be pretty filled during the day. You can also drive further and there will be more parkings, but you'll need to walk back. Take all what you need with you because there is literally nothing along the Esterel seaside, it's very wild. Beach access is pebbles, there is no sand. ACCESS: Car only

Starting from this beach, you can swim until the "Ile des Vieilles" island, but watch out, only if you are an experienced swimmer! This island is only for those who love snorkeling and who are confident in open water. It's a very wild place and you need to swim for about 250 meters to reach the island. The seabed around the island is very abrupt which makes it so nice to snorkle around. You can also step and walk on the island itself. ACCESS: Car only

There are many coves to access the water on the Sainte Marguerite island. This is not a precise spot. This is just an advice to walk further towards the EAST side of the island because the West side is very crowded. But as you walk closer to the "Pointe de la Convention", there will be less and less people. You will even be able to find solitary spots under magnificent stone pines with the view on the other island, Saint Honorat. You can also try the NORTH-EAST side which has even less people, but you don't have the view on the other island from there. ACCESS: Boat from Cannes Old Port

Family sandy beaches with easy access

Here I list all the beaches that are easy to access and to park nearby. They are good for families and people who just want to enjoy the pleasant sandy beaches without looking for exotic rocky places :)
Boccacabana is a large beach of sand and easy to access. There is also a beautiful promenade with bathrooms, snacks, restaurant Le Cabanon and a fitness area. If you don't find a parking spot along the beach road, you will be able to easily find more on the Avenue de la Roubine or the Boulevard du Rivage just behind, a 5 min walk. Or you can use the free shuttle called "Boccacabana" which tours the beach and the parkings in the area. Interesting to know: there is a free shuttle called "Boccacabana" that goes around La Bocca downtown, several parkings and the beaches along the coast. It's very convenient to use it.

The beachfront promenade in Mandelieu is very nice. Starting from the Port of La Napoule until the Plage du Chateau it's very easy and flat. After the Plage du Chateau it's a narrow path. And after the castle itself and the beach after it, it's a short and easy trek on the red rocks until a small hidden beach "La Rague".

Fireworks in Cannes - During summer, there are insane fireworks in the bay of Cannes about every 2 weeks. Check out the schedule of the "Festival pyrotechnique" to see the next date. Most people go sit on the beach or stand on the Croisette to watch them, and although it's always amazing, the best experience by far is to watch it from a boat. I can't recommend this enough, and myself I only do that now. The company Trans Côte d'Azur, the same one that goes to the islands, offers this option for acceptable prices, but you need to book before. Check on their website. You won't be disappointed!

Menton is extremely beautiful. The colors of its old buildings are truly unique on the French Riviera. Unfortunately, it's located at the very edge of it, so you'll need quite some time to get there either by car or train.

Alright, this is not the French Riviera anymore, it's about a 2 hour drive. But if your stay on the Riviera is long enough and you have time to go here, it's absolutely worth it. Basically, this place is a paradise for nature lovers. I go there several times every summer. Here's a non-exhaustive list of things that you can do here: 1) Kayak / Pedal boat in the Gorges du Verdon. This gorge is insanely beautiful but during peak summer, there are just way too many people and it degrades the experience. 2) Lavender fields. If you're thinking of particularly famous lavender field pictures, they were probably taken here, on the Plateau de Valensole, above the Sainte-Croix lake. But the period to see them starts from mid-June until mid-July. After mid-July, you won't see many of them. And none the rest of the year. 3) Moustiers-Sainte-Marie village. It's a very cute village which is on the list of the 150 most beautiful villages in France. 4) La route des crêtes, meaning the "Ridge road". This road is very impressive, and watch out if you're scared of heights! It's a loop that follows the cliffs of the Verdon gorge where there are world-renowned climbing spots. There are several breathtaking viewpoints along it.

Watch out, this is a very special place and it's not for everybody. If you enjoy the "real" night sky, the one where you actually see the stars, meteors (shooting stars) and satellites flying above, this is the place to go. And if you are lucky, you might meet a friendly amateur astronomer who'll let you watch in their telescopes. But many people who don't own a telescope still go there, find their spot, do a picnic just before it gets dark, and then lay down and admire the most beautiful night sky of the French Riviera. There are several important things to know before: - You obviously must go there when it's night. You can only start to see the night sky sometime after 22.00. The road is quite long, around 1 hour and a half from Cannes, and the last bit of it is very wild. There is almost nobody, just lonely mountains. And when you'll go back, it will be even later, so you'll be tired. Just know that you must be really motivated to go there. - It's an actual professional observatory. There is a parking for visitors and beyond that you can walk by foot everywhere. However, before you arrive to the parking, you'll encounter a sign that says "Turn off your lights" in french, and you MUST absolutely do it! It will be very dark, so to drive the last meters you must use your yellow warning lights only. NEVER turn on your main front lights after this sign or you will create problems for everyone who is using telescopes there. Also avoid your phone flash light when you walk, unless you really, really need it. The best is to simply take the time to get used to the dark. - Weather is key. There is absolutely no reason to go there if there are clouds. The ideal weather conditions for the best night is when there are 0 clouds and no wind. - There will be absolutely nothing on the site itself. You can't access or visit the professional observatories or any of the buildings. So take everything that you need with you, water, food, etc. As said previously, your best chance is to find amateur astronomers and use their telescopes. You'll hear their telescopes thanks to the typical "buzzing" shound that amateur telescopes make when they move. Most amateur astronomers are nice and approachable and will make you look through their telescopes. - Don't confuse this place with the Observatory of Nice. Once again, this is a very special activity, so do check for yourself if it's something for you or not.
