Pubs etc...

...and a bit about them
Amazing atmosphere Great food Cosy with log burner Booking recommended, especially for lunch Across the road from the pub there's a little Church with an exhibition about Lorrie Lee the poet and writer (Cider with Rosie). The Slad valley was his lifelong home and The Woolpack, his local. The Slad valley is one of the 'five valleys' that converge on Stroud and it is one of the most beautiful with lovely walks on both sides and a great viewpoint from the top of Swifts Hill. Getting there on foot Walk or drive to the end of Summer Street (20 mins on foot 5 mins by car). Continue on foot, along Summer Lane. After a mile or more, turn left at the T junction down the hill passing fence posts that have lovely paintings of badgers on them. As the road starts going uphill and just past the last house on your righthand side, climb over the style and walk steeply up to Slad Road. Turn right and in less than a mile you will find the pub on your right hand side. In total about 40 mins (car part of the way) or 55 mins (all on foot) each way.

Good food and a great selection of wines in the heart of Rodborough common (great easy hilltop walking and a public golf course, sometimes surrounded by cows, with incredible views across the Severn valley and into Wales). Great garden with comfortable seats and outside bar 10 minutes drive Across the road from the Bear Hotel - Winstones ice cream factory and shop. It's a Stroudy tradition on a sunny day to sit out on the grass, eat ice cream and take in the view. Rodborough common also boasts The Old Lodge (descent food and bars, and home to the golf club) and the Halfway House Cafe.

Our local, about 5-10 mins walk. Everything a proper local pub should be; warm, friendly with frequent events and run by a true one-off, Rodder. Geographically out of the centre, this is undoubtedly the beating heart of alternative, creative, eccentric, Stroud. Buzzing on Friday evenings and when events are on, but it can also be a low key venue with a good vibe. Sunny garden, events including live music, big sporting fixtures, festivals, dog show, fireworks, flower and produce show, stand up, etc.)

Heading east from Stroud, the Bakehouse is just outside the stunning Chalford village and offers delicious food, home made cakes, tea and coffee. A fantastic motivation for a canal walk (you can start from the Waitrose car park). Its also a good jumping off point for a walk further up the canal towards Sapperton with its two very good pubs; the Daneway right on the canal and adjacent to the western end of the legendary and now defunct, Sapperton tunnel a (60 mins on foot from the Bakehouse) and the other The Bell, up the hill in the heart of this pretty village (another 15 mins on foot). There's another good pub, in Coates, at the other end of the tunnel, The Tunnel House - nestled between woods and fields with a lovely garden (20 mins drive).
