AWARD WINNING WINES FROM THE BEAUTIFUL GIPPSLAND LAKES AND RIVERS REGION Since 1978, our aim has been to create wines reminiscent of the great European styles, with a character that reflect the intense flavours unique to the area. The extensive range of wines on offer is ideal for people wanting more than the mainstream can offer, and are great with food. We make small quantities – 30 to 200 dozen – of wines that suit our soils and climate, and that we find interesting. Visit our Cellar Door for a tasting and a chat. We have a picnic area that is ideal for enjoying lunch or a snack over-looking the lovely Nicholson River while the kids play. Local cheese and anti-pasto platters are now available at Cellar Door. Bookings are appreciated.

An interest in wine developed from a misspent youth living and working in parts of Europe where wine was an everyday beverage. Classic and everyday wines were enjoyed in different parts of Europe and vineyards, regions and wineries were visited. From a background in farming in south east Queensland it was a revelation that wines of perceived quality, classic wines, could be produced that far from the equator with such a variable climate. Over this time a belief developed that classic wines of a world standard could be produced in Australia. Fruit concentration, complexity, balance, length and sense of place are at the heart of great wine. These are characters which can be formed only in the vineyard. Our primary task at Tambo wine is to grow grapes with these characters which express the site and to maintain the essence of this fruit character to the bottle.

Lightfoot & Sons Myrtle Point Vineyard is located in East Gippsland, Victoria, within view of the Gippsland Lakes. The vineyard site, situated between the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and Bass Strait, was selected when soil mapping of the region identified tracts of the much celebrated Terra Rosa over Limestone soil structure. The 29Ha vineyard was planted between 1995-1997 by the Lightfoot family on their farm ‘Myrtle Point’. Pinot Noir plantings make up almost half, with smaller bocks of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet. Good annual rainfall of around 700mm and a regular coastal breeze throughout the growing season provides good airflow within the canopy and assists in the natural management of healthy vines. Shoot thinning and crop thinning when required, along with and limited use of irrigation helps maintain low cropping levels of less than 2 tonnes per acre. The maritime influence in the vineyard has a moderating effect on the cool climate and enables our fruit to develop flavours that have great varietal character and depth of flavour.

Good spot to stop and taste the water. Very peaceful and just a lovely view. No facilities, but can easily get to the top of the falls. Shaded and good for a break. Some very steep banks so the bottom is not generally accessible and dangerous to get to. Even the top can easily see kids fly over the edge, otherwise beautiful spot.

Located high on the Western side of Lakes Entrance this popular lookout offers uninterrupted views of Rigbys Island, Bullock Island, waterways and the man made entrance for vessels plying their trade in and around Lakes Entrance and it's 400 plus square kilometres of waterways. Rigby Island is home to many shorebirds including the Little Tern and Fairy Tern. The island can be accessed by boat and is only a few hundred metres away from Bullock Island heading west from the Lakes Entrance marina. Here, at the sandy shores, not far from the entrance itself, we did manage to catch a few good Bream. Some large Trevally and Flathead are to be snagged here, well according to some friends. In general, it’s a nice secluded spot except for fishing in the area. The Island is home to the Fairy Tern and Little Tern, also many other shore birds. A lovely area to walk the white sands or just sit and observe the surroundings
