“Banh mi” is the Vietnamese translation of for the words ‘French baguette’ introduced during the colonial period. But when most people say “banh mi”, they’re specifically referring to the sandwich that’s often hailed as being one of the best sandwiches in the world. Pho Hoa Pasteur A restaurant with a long legacy, Pho Hoa consistently ranks as one of the best places to sample Vietnam’s most popular noodle soup. Pho Hoa Restaurant has been run by successive generations of the same family which adds a little history to your meal. The broth recipe here is a family secret which helps create a little mystique around the flavours. Served with your bowl of pho is a plate of deep fried bread called qouy. This bread is actually of Chinese origin but it is finding favour as a daytime side dish. Our favourite option here is the pho with beef tendon, which is chewy and succulent. Pho Hoa is on Pasteur Street in District 1, with two floors and air-conditioning upstairs. Address: 260C Pasteur Street, District 1 Operating Hours: 7:00 AM -10:00 PM, daily Expect to Pay: VND 40,000 – 55,000 per bowl Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence

Cơm Tấm Trần Quý Cáp Cơm tấm Trần Quý Cáp is known for being one of the best places in Saigon to have cơm tấm or broken rice. It’s been open for decades and is a favorite of many Vietnamese families. My Vietnamese friends swear by this place. A friend of mine said its been patronized by him, his father and grandfather. Three generations of Vietnamese can’t be wrong! Order the com tam suon nuong which is grilled pork chop with broken rice. It’s referred to as “broken rice” because it’s made with fragments of rice grains that were broken either in the field, during drying, during transport, or by milling. The broken rice tastes nuttier than regular rice, almost like risotto. But get ready to be blown away by the pork chop. It will be the best pork chop you’ve ever tasted – savory sweet and very tender. You’ll really enjoyed it with the cơm tấm.

Ốc Oanh is a very popular place to eat in Saigon. Located along Vinh Khanh Street in District 4, this area is known for having some of the best street seafood in Ho Chi Minh City. Nicknamed “Seafood Street”, there you’ll find several blocks of sidewalk restaurants serving different types of seafood. Alex of Inspitrip took us to Ốc Oanh which is the most famous restaurant on this strip. Luke Nguyen featured this place as well on the second episode of Street Food Asia. Every first time visitor I bring here enjoys this place so much that they would come back to eat again and for sure this place will be packed every time you come back.
