Caswell Beach is just 2 miles down toward the lighthouse. There is a parking area before the lighthouse area and the beach is wide and not so crowded. It's a great place to escape to if regular beach areas become more crowded for your liking.

If you want a neat experience head over to Bald Head Island and spend the day. The ferry leaves from the Southport Pier starting 7am and ending 11pm. Trips on the hour. Cost $23 adult and $12 child (3-12yrs). Rent a cart by phone as you head over on the ferry from Cary Cart Co. (look up on Google). A cart for 4 costs $75-80 and for 6 $120 all day. You may want to shop around for a better price too. Visit the lighthouse, travel the beaches, watch the birds - a great experience for everyone! My wife and I took a day trip on our electric bikes. We loaded the bikes in the truck and traveled 20 min. to the Deep Point dock where we unloaded and drove the bikes right up to the loading area. Claimed extra baggage and bought tickets and walked on the ferry. A short 20 min trip and we were biking on beautiful Bald Head Island! The foliage is so different from the mainland. Palmettos and other palms and cycads basked in the sunny pockets of the quaint shaded roads. Wirey island oak trees twisted by the arid windy weather added to the dry jungle feel. No cars here silence is everywhere and amidst the seasonal changes where people come and go you find yourself in another world. My thoughts came together here in the quiet. Yet on the shore of the island point where the waters of the Atlantic met the island sands driven by the winds it was none less than fury. Although there was a serene quiet in the midst of it. At a time when the busyness of life crestin in my life, the quiet I heard in the fury of the winds and sea brought rest. Perhaps you may feel that too should you venture to Bald Head Island.

What to pack

Bring sunscreen, your favorite beach chair, a beach umbrella. Bring your favorite foods but really you can get everything right there on the island. A Food Lion and Publix are just within a mile or so of the house. Bring bikes! Great place for kids to bike and miles of quiet roads to travel. Watch the major through road E. Oak Island Drive as that gets busy in prime season. You can rent a golf cart if you want or bikes too. Kayaks are available for rent for the waterway. There is a boat put-in on 55th St. and Yacht Dr.
