John Constable famously painted Salisbury Cathedral and the surrounding water meadows. A walk down the city’s Town Path takes you past one of the spots where he painted.
The city was originally known as New Sarum to differentiate it from Old Sarum – the site of the first cathedral. Old Sarum is now owned by English Heritage.
There are markets in Salisbury held in the Market Square on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Regular markets have been held here since 1227. There is also a Farmers’ Market on a Wednesday where you can buy local produce.
In 2012, Salisbury was awarded Purple Flag status. Purple Flag is the accreditation scheme that recognises excellence in the management of town and city centres at night. Entertainment areas that achieve the standard offer a better night out to visitors

In 1201 William Briwere, right-hand man to four Plantagenet kings, founded the Priory of the Holy Trinity here. Mottisfont held the forefinger of St John the Baptist as a sacred relic, and eager pilgrims came to be blessed by the Augustinian canons.

Hundreds of prosperous years were followed by devastation from the Black Death and other disasters. In 1536, the dissolution of the monasteries saw the Mottisfont estate gifted to Henry VIII’s Lord Chamberlain, Lord Sandys.
A Tudor palace
Lord Sandys set about transforming the priory into a grand house. During the 1500s and 1600s the Sandys divided their time between Mottisfont and their family seat, The Vyne.
Queen Elizabeth I visited Mottisfont twice. But in 1684 the eighth and last Baron Sandys died childless, and Mottisfont was left to his nephew.
Georgian refurbishments
The Mill family transformed Mottisfont into the building and landscapes recognisable today. The estate was used for country pursuits.

The Great Plane tree was planted in this period: it’s now thought to be the largest and oldest of its kind in Britain.
The eccentric end of a century
In 1884 Mottisfont became home to Daniel Meinertzhagen, his wife Georgina (the sister of social reformer Beatrice Webb) and their ten children. They took the house on a lease from Mrs Marianne Vaudrey-Barker-Mill, under terms that forbade electric lighting or central heating.
The Meinertzhagens entertained noted intellectuals including George Bernard Shaw and Charles Darwin. The children grew up with a whole estate as their playground.
Following their departure Mrs Vaudrey-Barker-Mill spent the equivalent of £3 million restoring Mottisfont, exposing medieval masonry. But she still refused to contemplate electric lighting.
The Russells
The arrival of the Russells made Mottisfont the centre of a fashionable artistic and political circle. Imagine the sparkle of 1930s house parties, where ‘Bright Young Things’ rubbed shoulders with writers, painters and poets.

The Mill family transformed Mottisfont into the building and landscapes recognisable today. The estate was used for country pursuits.

The stable block dates from 1836
The Great Plane tree was planted in this period: it’s now thought to be the largest and oldest of its kind in Britain.
The eccentric end of a century
In 1884 Mottisfont became home to Daniel Meinertzhagen, his wife Georgina (the sister of social reformer Beatrice Webb) and their ten children. They took the house on a lease from Mrs Marianne Vaudrey-Barker-Mill, under terms that forbade electric lighting or central heating.
The Meinertzhagens entertained noted intellectuals including George Bernard Shaw and Charles Darwin. The children grew up with a whole estate as their playground.
Following their departure Mrs Vaudrey-Barker-Mill spent the equivalent of £3 million restoring Mottisfont, exposing medieval masonry. But she still refused to contemplate electric lighting.
The Russells
The arrival of the Russells made Mottisfont the centre of a fashionable artistic and political circle. Imagine the sparkle of 1930s house parties, where ‘Bright Young Things’ rubbed shoulders with writers, painters and poets.
The magnificent Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is world famous for its arboretum and gardens – set over 180 acres of rolling Hampshire countryside; this garden is stunning whatever the season.
Established by the distinguished plantsman Sir Harold Hillier in 1953, it is now home to 14 National Collections, over 400 Champion Trees and 42,000 plants from temperate regions. It is one of the most important modern plant collections in the world.
Outstanding attractions include;‘Centenary Border’one of the longest double borders in the UK measuring 250m long and one of the largest Winter Gardens in Europe. Pond and a Bog Garden.
Let Children Explore
The Gardens are a wonderful place for children to play and explore. They love to climb the fantastic tree house, jump across the wobbly bridge, weave through the bamboo tunnels, swing on the super snake swing and test their climbing and balancing skills on the Hilltop Adventures mini ‘assault loop’. Equally they love running free, rolling down grassy banks, searching the woods for foraging pigs and look out for the fish and ducks in the Pond. With so much to do, one visit just won’t be enough. During the school holidays we provide a wide range of family activities and trails.

Spring - A perfect time to experience and enjoy the stunning plant collection. With spring bulbs bursting into flower; Magnolias, Japanese flowering cherries, Azaleas and Rhododendrons all in their full glory.
Summer - Walk down and marvel at one of the longest double borders in the country. At 250m long, the Centenary Border is a kaleidoscope of colour. Look out for the striking Red Hot Pokers, Echinacea and Crocosmia.
Autumn - See the range of Champion Trees clothed in bronze and gold, as the autumn sun ripens the fruits and berries of the season.
Winter - The Winter Garden covers over four acres and is one of the largest in Europe. Filled with plants that show off their bold coloured bark and incredible scents.
