City/town information

Cute typical midwestern town. The Restoration 44 coffee shop is excellent (and locally owned by friends), you can rent kayaks at Breakaway Excursions (or Camp Hi just north of the house), and the streets are nice to walk around.

If you want some fancy food, Hudson and Chagrin Falls are likely to scratch your itch. Both have excellent high end restaurants.

Home to Kent State University, the newly built downtown area is lively, varied, and clean - yet inexpensive. Hudson has a similar downtown redevelopment, but this one is made for students and the working man. Tons of restaurants and a bunch of nice parks. Be sure to take the trail under the downtown bridge by the river. Access at the SW corner of Gougler and Main St.

One of the few national parks in the middle of the country, there are lots of hiking trails, waterfalls, and cool spots to see here. Peninsula lies in the heart of it and has the excellent Winking Lizard Tavern - great wings and beer. The Towpath trail in the park is a rails to trails conversion, so it's great for just toodling along with your family, although it is quite busy on weekends.

If you'd like to go canoeing or kayaking and need more than the 1 canoe we have, this is a great place. It is about 2 miles north of us on the river. You can do a longer ride that ends at Camp Hi from the north, or leave from Camp Hi and stop just after our house at White Oaks takeout. Also checkout Breakaway Excursions in Mantua.

One of Nate's favorite places to go, the tours are excellent and the gardens are amazing. It was built by John Seiberling who founded Goodyear Tire. It looks like a British Manor 3500 miles from home.

Considered the second best art museum in the US behind New York's Metropolitan museum, if you're a museum buff go see this. It's free too except a rotating exhibit.

Food scene

We used to have a Mexican restaurant blog, we've been to over 50. This is our favorite. Dave, the owner, learned from his grandma and makes great authentic food.

One of our favorite restaurants, it has a bistro feel. Not cheap, but not expensive either. Haven't had a bad thing on their eclectic menu.

A burrito joint from before most in Ohio knew what one was. They are not afraid of spices, very flavorful food with a gourmet twist. Don't expect Chipotle. It's right in downtown Kent, so a great place to walk around from.

Another local favorite for us. Where Crave is heavier on veggies, the Bistro is heavier on comfort food. It's workable with kids, but better for a night out.

Get the basics nearby

Dollar General and Haylett's general store a mile up the road at Routes 44 and 82 carry the basics. The Shell station across the street has one of the best beer, wine, and liquor selections you'll find anywhere, it just happens to be in our tiny town.
