Hideaway Beach (Pali Ke Kua) on Kauai’s north shore is a beautiful spot for snorkeling during calm weather. Typically a summertime beach, this spot can be accessed by steep path neer the Pali Ke Kua Condos. Hideaways Beach is true to the name and this secluded beach is worth the trek, but it is advisable to use extreme caution and is probably best left to those who are in good health and physical condition. Pu'u Poa Beach (also spelled Puu Poa) is on the northeast edge of Hanalei Bay, running northeast from the mouth of the Hanalei River and ending in front of Hanalei Bay Resort and the Princeville St. Regis Hotel. This reef protected, golden sand beach is the longest in the Princeville area - quite wide in front of the hotel and narrower near the river. Large trees behind it provide shade for all but a few hours of the day. The beach faces directly west toward Bali Hai making it ideal for enjoying those picture perfect post card sunsets.

Princeville at Hanalei retains the peace and beauty of ancient days, when Hawaiians farmed in the green valley below. Named Princeville in 1860 in honor of Hawaii’s Crown Prince Albert, this lovely area has been home to sugar plantations and a cattle ranch. Hawaiians cultivated the lush valley of Hanalei, establishing irrigated taro fields and harvesting the ocean’s riches centuries before Captain James Cook landed on Kauai in 1778. Newly arrived Westerners began cattle ranching in the 1830s, and tried crops ranging from silkworms to coffee with varying degrees of success. Hanalei fruit and potatoes helped feed miners during California’s Gold Rush. Robert Crichton Wyllie, a colorful and adventuresome Scot who had served as the Kingdom of Hawaii’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, acquired land near Hanalei in 1853. In 1860 Wyllie named his sugar plantation Princeville to honor the visit of two-year-old Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli Lei O Papa a Kamehameha and his parents, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. Sadly, the little prince died in 1862.

Lihue is the government and commercial center of the island, as well as a cultural and historical area. This may be the most traveled town on Kauai since it is home to Kauai’s main airport (the Lihue Airport) and Nawiliwili Harbor, the island's major commercial shipping center and cruise ship port. Lihue has a variety of natural wonders to explore. Kalapaki Beach is the home of the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club and the Hokuala Golf Resort. Bodysurfing, SUP, surfing and swimming make Kalapaki a popular destination. Ninini Beach is home to an automated lighthouse, in operation since 1897. And just north of Lihue, don’t forget to stop at the Wailua Falls lookout for an amazing waterfall view.

It is reccomended to rent a car from Lihue airport upon your arrival. All major car rental agencies operate out of the Airport.

Helicopter rides are the best to see the Na Pali Coastline!

Helicopter rides are always recommended, you will see Kauai like the postcards pictures! I recommend Blue Hawaiian helicopters in Princeville but all companies are all kind of unique in their tours.

Boat tours are also available out of Hanalei Bay

The boat ride to Napali Coast is amazing and one of the most beautiful parts of Kauai. There is no driving access so you will have to get there by boat or helicopter. Boat rides have seasons, normally they would leave out of Port Allen area but sometimes in summer they would leave from Hanalei since it depends on the Swell conditions. My recommended companies are Captain Andys, Holo holo charters or Kauai Sea tours.

Surfing and Kayaking are a must do!

Surfing classes in Hanalei Bay by Hawaiian adventures. Rent a kayak and kayak the Hanalei River.

Kauai culture and aloha spirit

The cultural attractions of Kauai is among the most unique of the Hawaiian islands, despite the fact that most of the Hawaiians islands already have a unique culture all on their own. The Garden Isle is a land with a rich and varied culture, as seen in its local theater performers, songs, dance, music, language, food, and native arts. Its unique culture also pervades the whole island with the ready and happy smiles of its locals who were born with and live in the spirit of aloha.
