Food scene

This is a fantastic and iconic downtown Gilbert brunch restaurant. Do not be discouraged by the lines out front, we promise it’s worth the wait (plus they’ll send text updates so you can explore in the meantime!). If you are an eggs benedict fan, they have an amazing selection of options to choose from, but we also love their breakfast tacos or any of their breakfast sandwiches – don’t forget to add on a single side of their ‘famous’ pineapple upside down pancake…YUM!

This is our favorite downtown Gilbert dinner spot! They have a ridiculously good soft pretzel and provolone cheese appetizer to share and we love the roasted salmon and the turkey pastrami sandwich (but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!). If you save room for dessert, their candy bar brownie with gelato is a very worthwhile choice. There are also games to play if you’re with a group and live music at night on Friday and Saturday! Insider tip: they have 25% off take-out on Tuesdays with code TUESDAY25.

The menu here is small but mighty; and if you like burritos, then you have to make time for a ‘Topo Loco’ burrito. This small stand in downtown Gilbert sources it’s meat from the BBQ shop next door so you know it’ll be next level. Topo is deceiving because they serve only a few things, soft serve ice cream included, but it is definitely worth the visit.

We love supporting fun, local establishments and this is a great stop for a good, hearty burger (and if you’re 21+, they also have a really unique beer selection from their brewery).

A lunchtime spot in Gilbert Town Square that will not disappoint. Big, delicious sandwiches…and even bigger cookies for a sweet treat!

Just down the road from us, you can have some Handel’s homemade ice cream (established in 1945!). We have sweet-tooths and this hits the spot with unique and fun flavors. If you’re staying on a Tuesday, they have discounted cones this night (they’re typically half price and they sales on take home quarts).

Downtown Gilbert every Saturday 8a-12p – if you are staying over a Saturday, the Downtown Gilbert Famer Market is wonderful and a great way to explore the downtown area even more. They have plenty of food truck options (Crepes, various breakfast scrambles, Acai bowls, and so much more!), fresh coffee or espresso stands, and a ton of local vendors (with anything from local cheeses to fresh produce, to homemade soaps, to ‘world famous cookies’, to salsas and hummus to gluten-free/keto-friendly/vegan/etc. items and more). It is located in the Park and Ride area just West of the iconic Water Tower in Downtown Gilbert – check their hours online as they may change seasonally to adjust for the hotter summer temps.

Hiking

Favorite Hikes: Hieroglyphic Trail at Superstition Mountains in Gold Canyon (moderate) – this hike is cool as you get to experience the Superstition Mountains and you end in a canyon with ancient hieroglyphics on the boulders.

Favorite Hikes: Tom’s Thumb in North Scottsdale (moderate/difficult) – Tom’s Thumb is a nice hike as the 1st 1.2 miles in are a little steeper with amazing views and the last 1 mile is flat eventually summitting you to the famous ‘Tom’s Thumb’. This is a nice drive to north Scottsdale with beautiful mountain views and the trail here is very clearly marked – if you are an avid hiker, you can tack on additional parts of this mountain to make the hike even longer.

Favorite Hikes: Camelback in Scottsdale (difficult) – Camelback is an iconic Scottsdale hike but be very prepared for steep inclines and to boulder parts of this hike. We highly recommend hiking boots (if you have them). The views from the top are worth the trek but there are some areas of steepness where you have to hold onto a handrail, so just read up on this hike and be prepared.

Hiking Advice!

We recommend bringing a LOT of water (the temps and sun get very hot!) & depending on the time of year, go earlier in the day to avoid peak mid-day heat (most areas of these hikes are not shaded so you are fully exposed to the sun). We recommend looking at the trail/hike and the respective reviews on AllTrails.com before your trip – this can be a great repository of insight before your adventure. We also recommend downloading a trail map prior to your trip from Google Maps or All Trails – some areas lose service so it’s best to prepare in advance. Pack sunscreen & snacks too!
