Across the river bridge and to the left at the intersection by the store. Drive until you stop. Green Bay is old cottage country with little beaches everywhere. There is MacLeods Canteen that serves fast food as well as ice cream.

Sperry’s Beach is the local favourite as most people new to the area don’t know how to access it except from Risser’s Beach. It is the small beach across the river from Risser’s, so you can swim across the river channel or you can drive toward Green Bay and across from Mariner Craft, a lovely artisan shop of pottery and other home made crafts, there is a road going to the left. Keep going straight toward the water where the road turns into a dirt road. Be careful as it’s a one way road and traffic may be coming out of the beach area. A bit more private and they say the water is warmer, too

Hirtle’s Beach is a HUGE beach with good surfing waves. If you are into hiking be prepared to to be amazed by Gaff Point which is a 7km walk starting on the beach and accessing the bluff at the end of the beach. Considered a moderate walk, it is a protected area owned by the province and the Nature Conservancy of Nova Scotia. Stunning views.

Located on a picturesque point at the mouth of the LaHave River, the ocean-side views are breath taking. This National Historic Site was the first capital of New France in 1632, the beginning steps of Acadian history in Canada. The quaint building on site was once a lighthouse keeper’s home and is part of Nova Scotia’s proud lighthouse heritage. Today, the museum celebrates the LaHave community from the first inhabitants to the present day, with treasures, activities and stories that bring our past to life.

Food scene

Great homemade breads and pastries, and also a fabulous place to go for a lunch as they make mini pizzas, hamburgers, soups, and homemade lemonade. Sit outside on one of the picnic tables or Adirondacks and watch the traffic on the LaHave River go by. You are right next to the LaHave Ferry which runs every 1/2 hour unless there is heavy traffic in which case it takes off when full. A pleasant way to explore the other side of the river and it’s communities including the UNESCO World Heritage Town Of Lunenburg

If you’ve run out of something, I’m sure you’ll find it here. They sell it all including alcohol and ice cream. They stock local produce when it’s available, including organic meats, sausages and the like. Chips, dairy, canned goods, touristy T-shirts and big scoops of ice cream.

Decades in the making and running, it became one of the first vineyards in Nova Scotia when wine making was revived here. Of course the French made wine here! One just needed to rediscover the type of grape they used historically. With climate change it was an even better area to grow, and the right acidity in the soil, the industry has flourished in this province

Medical

A local vet clinic can come in handy. Dr.Shirleen Guest has established herself here a few years, and loves it. Ready to handle any pet problems and equipped for most minor surgeries, if needed, she has become a welcome resident.

Fire Hall

Located across from the store, prior to Covid it hosted a dance almost every month in the summer with live bands and licenced for alcohol. And the monthly Fireman’s Breakfast? Well, there was such a selection and a means to see the neighbours it was standing room only. Hopefully, we’ll get back to that point
