Bucket list beach

Situated on the edge of the Cape Fear Coastline in between the bustling towns of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach, the Masonboro Island Estuarine Reserve is a unique slice of undeveloped and natural barrier island shoreline that’s an important habitat for countless coastal species. Hard to reach but wonderfully isolated, visitors who make a trip to this literal deserted island will be rewarded with great shelling, beautiful landscapes, and miles of beaches to go around. https://www.outerbanks.com/masonboro-island-coastal-estuarine-reserve.html

This little island is the 2nd one to the right hand side of the end of our dock. It is only 3-7 minute paddle and has a nice fluffy white sand beach shaded by a big tree with a rope swing hanging over the water. Pop over to this little island to watch the sun go down with a glass of wine or bring some towels, chairs and a cooler full of beverages and make it your day trip to your own private beach. With the prevailing on shore trade winds, this spot is often wind protected making for glassy water surfaces that may make you think you are in the South Seas.

Best Fish monger in Wilmington. The best stuff right off the boat. About 2 miles from cottage. During spring/summer/fall there is a fresh fruit and vegetable market in the adjacent space. This is also a close by spot to get (free) fish heads or carcasses to bait the crab traps available for your use. So many guests have crushed it on the blue and stone crabs.

Our neighbor is a shrimper and that’s his boat. He is a commercial shrimper but his wife runs a seafood shop right at their dock. Paddle your dang kayak five docks north and tie up to their dock to check out the daily catch. It’s about 400 meters away. Or drive the round about mile to check it out. Call Joyce to check the catch if you’re skittish…or lazy.

This is a new spot right in the center of the tourist gong show that is Carolina Beach. From that standpoint it is like a culinary oasis in a veritable food desert. The young chef is inventive and comes up with the most ingenious recipes forged from what is available THAT DAY (not fresh-but-yesterday). The menu is simple but the ingredients are splendid. Ridiculous how good this spot is.

This is a dive bar and small plates grub spot on the very north end of Carolina Beach. As with many of our suggestions (Island burger & Bites, Shucknshack, The Dive, Fat Pelican, etc.), it’s another locals’ gem in the grizzled little tourist beach town just south of our cottage. This spot has a lot of great local color, a great outdoor view on a broken down fishing pier, all the people watching you could want, and kind of upscale pub cuisine.

A few blocks from the Historic District, is a vibrant, historic section of the city that offers fine dining, nightlife, and theater as well as opportunities for shopping. In addition to the many new retail businesses that have moved in near Front Street in downtown, the Castle Street Antique District has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Check out Oivero (new upscale dining venue), Rx Ousters & Chicken, Wilmington Wine Bar interspersed with a few antiwue and vintage resale shops and a few other bars and cafes. This is an interesting walk through historic neighborhoods in the Historic District. I
