Drinks & Nightlife

Because at 49 Broadway its open at 11am daily with an award winning locally themed bar providing good food, good beer, good cheer, the best menu tasting seasonal plates in town with the best service as well and good beer is their motto. Guests go there for a great cup of coffee with a menu going all day. They even grab a brunch - or is that lunch and my favorite has to be the " satay Pork Belly SliderDuo" with its peanut slaw aioli and chunky fries. Ofcourse followed by the " peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake" my gosh thats different, with its lovely biscuit base and all those chocolate shavings served with genuine New Zealand kapiti coast icecream made of Salted caramel!!!! whew.

so if you are after a big breakfast with a hearty countrystyle punch, then 3 minutes down the road from our barn is the cheese factory. I had a huge plate of bacon, eggs, sausage, tomato, mushrooms, black pudding and a hash brown and it only set me back about $22!!! lasted all day. I went with Dewi and he chose the "Kaimai Steak sandwich" which i tell you it had the biggest prime scotch fillet on a ciabatta i had ever seen. Orcourse you have to have a good old "Flat White" when you are "cafe-ing" in New Zealand and their outside umbrella scene is perfect for a nice relaxing meal. By the way Dewi went in for seconds and tried the " corn fritter stack" so hes not going to need dinner tonight!

This is such a cool place!!! Its a bar in Cambridge's pink church, a gothic style build from 1898, itself a iconic landmark "repurposed" for all those who love the beercraft trail scene. Its all about good people food and beer!! an authentic BBQ experience where locally sourced meats are cooked "low and slow" for up to 15 hours using traditional woods and a wood smoker. And guess what, unpasterised Good George beer ad cider is piped from the fermentation tanks at the Frankton brewery in a modified firetruck and delivered to the tanks at Good Union. very very awesome!!!! you have to try their local taphouse experience and smokehouse meatboard for 2!!! beef brisket, chirizo sausage, pulled pork

At 52 Broadway Matamata, everyone local knows "Syd and his funky Cafe and bar". Its eccentric like Syd and you will love it!!! Old transistor radios dangle from the ceiling, and if that doesnt tickle your fancy , theres a wall full of art deco mirrors to spot yourself in. Listen to Johnny Cash on stereo and sit back and enjoy this iconic restaurant setting open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Whats neat is its anytime for wine and coffee offer !!! Guests have been trying his T-Bone and port venison dish with date sauce. Dewi loved the slow roasted pork belly with hints of cardomom and five spice - its the crispy crackling - not bad for $32 NZ. Go Syd!!!

Sightseeing

Guests have been absolutely thrilled when they discovered this little bush walk gem sighted in the Kaimai Ranges in our backyard. A ten minute drive away. Take a torch. Plan to be up there on sunset. This waterfall setting, the tallest in the North Island, delivers an amazing package for those who wish to venture. Catching the sunset at the top, as it goes down over the Piako plains, they descend into the Bush with their torches lighting the way to discover an amazing display of glow worms in walls under a breathtakingly beautiful starry canopy. Absolutely stunning and the best part is its free!!!!

From the Barn you can see Mount Te Aroha looming out of the landscape as the highest point in the kaimai Mamaku Forest park. This iconic feature points to the famous historic spa town beneath it started in 1883 due to the discovery of gold quartz. A booming Edwardian spa developed and today guests enjoy tramping this distinctive landmark for its abandoned goldmines trails, old gold mining pack tracks and tramways or staying longer in overnight huts. Followed by a deep relaxing soak in the beautiful cedar hot mineral water tubs, experienced therapists offer pampering treatments in coconut milk baths, with macadamia and coconut oil massages. This is "bliss" after a refreshing outdoor tramp.

because its the most awesome coastal town in the North Island with so much style!!! a great day out. Its the famous black sands and its long surf beach. And there is a surprise once you get there, amongst the native forest- the Bridal Veil Falls!!!! There is an extinct forested volcano with views at the summit over the Tasman sea. But what I love is the arts and a simply good old cup of coffee in a quaint little boutique town full of interest. Tapas, raw vegan sweets, sushi, burritos, curries seafood. I love watching the local kiwi kids jump off the wharf- thats got to be the main attraction

This is a recent fun activity tour I highly recommend. Stand up and paddle, Kayak, mountain bike, glow worms all at the end of the karapiro, 15 minutes from our little provincial town of Matamata. You just have to feel fit, like open spaces and fresh air and yea dont forget your camera- you will want to capture the fun!!! It was the early evening paddle down the lake, so tranquil, through a canyon, floating silently and then there they were- glow worms like christmas lights. We had jumped on mountain bikes that day- a three hour return trip along the river Waikato- we hired our bikes and the views were amazing , native bush, huge tree ferns, birds- really fresh and New Zealand at its best!

unbelievable forest views and lush Waikato landscape, this is an absolute haven for adventurous walkers. Muddy slippery, steep fun, to find stunning views of the central Plateau of the North Island. Climb mountain tracks, clamber over tree roots, outcrops- families will love this day out exloring a natural environment where you get lots of exercise and fresh air. Dont worry theres a visitor centre and they make great icecreams!!! This is an ancient forest setting. Look for the takahe and Tuatara and listen for the kiwi calling- pretty special for its endangered species with a curtain of glow worms lit up under a starry night sky. This is NZ;s largest fenced sanctuary- a forest exploration!!!

Shopping

its a small little place oozing with character- and its name Tirau in Maori means " place with many cabbage trees". lately its been dubbed the "corrugated capital of the world" and you will see why when you explore the small boutique shops, cafes and antique shops and find the large corrugated sheep and dog!!! But my most favourite shop in the world lies at the top of the hill. So after indulging in a nice flat white and mooching around the tiny gift shops head up to "Nottinghill Interiors". At nos 5 on the main street, step inside this amazing iconic destination store. It is simpl classic sophisticated, timeless and gorgeous!!! Its the vintage leather, old wood, glassware, vintage relics..
