Parke’s Castle occupies a striking setting on the northern shores of Lough Gill in County Leitrim. A restored castle of the early seventeenth century, it was once the home of English planter Robert Parke. There is evidence of an earlier structure on the site, a tower house once owned by Sir Brian O’Rourke, lord of West Breifne. O’Rourke, whom one English governor described as ‘the proudest man this day living on the earth’, resisted crown rule and fled Ireland, but ended up in the hands of Queen Elizabeth’s forces. He was thrown into the Tower of London, tried and finally hanged at Tyburn.

Along the drive or walk can be clearly seen the dramatic cliffs containing the cave that served as a hiding place for mythical runaway lovers Diarmuid and Grainne. There are two beautiful short walks here along the river and a 5 mile walk around the horseshoe itself is magnificent.

Although Staid is traditionally called Staid Abbey there is no evidence that it was an Abbey. The present church may date to around the 15th century AD but the site in general seems to be associated with the early medieval monastic site of Inishmurray Island, which lies about 6.5km way. It may originally date to the 10th century or earlier and was possibly used as a hostel or stopping off point for clergy, pilgrims and other travellers to Inishmurray. Captain de Cuellar, a survivor of the three Spanish Armada ships wrecked at Streedagh in 1588, mentions Staid in a letter he wrote telling of his adventures.

Benbulben is known as County Sligo’s 'Table Mountain' and is part of the Dartry Mountains. Benbulben was formed as a result of the different responses to erosion of the limestone and shale of which the mountain is formed. A hard and resistant limestone forms the upper cliffs and precipices. Benbulben was formed during the Ice age, when large parts of the Earth were under glaciers. It was originally merely a large ridge, however the moving glaciers cut into the earth, leaving a distinct formation, now called Benbulben.

Although commonly known as Sligo Abbey, the correct title for this structure is the Convent of the Holy Cross. It was in fact a Dominican Friary. It was originally built in 1253 by the order of Maurice Fitzgerald, Baron of Offaly, (who is also credited with being the real founder of Sligo). It was destroyed in 1414 by a fire, ravaged during the Tyrone War in 1595 and once more in 1641 during the Ulster Uprising. The friars moved out in the 18th Century, but the abbey was restored in the 1850s.

This enormous cairn atop Knocknarea is 55 meters in diameter by 10 meters high. Folklore says it was built for the mythical Iron Age Queen Maeve, whose father, the high king of Ireland, gave her Connacht as a gift. Archaeologists believe it may really date back to 3000 BC, but who is to say that Queen Maeve was not tucked into an existing monument? It is considered bad luck to remove a stone from the cairn, and good luck to take one up the hill with you to deposit on it.
