A unique attraction located just a few minutes south of Gainesville in Micanopy, it is an easy and worthwhile drive from Alachua. The park consists of more than 20,000 acres and was originally discovered by a nationally-renowned naturalist more than two centuries ago, who branded it ‘The Great Alachua Savannah.’

Paynes Prairie is unique in many ways. Nowhere else in Florida can visitors experience wild-roaming bison and horses. Nearly 300 species of birds also frequent the park along with alligators, deer and many other animals. The park’s eight trails, including the 16-mile paved Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail, allow one to explore the park’s interior and observe wildlife, while a 50-foot high observation tower provides for panoramic views. During a visit to Paynes Prairie, one can easily understand why Seminole Indians once occupied a village along this vast savannah.

Despite damage to the trail which led to closures in some places, it is still worth heading out to Payne's Prairie to see what you can see. On a good day, that will be tons of gators and even horses, along with a historic ranch.
