Nijo Castle (二条城, Nijōjō) was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of the first Shogun of the Edo Period. Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace after the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1867. The castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Outside of the Ninomaru Palace extends the Ninomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden with a large pond, ornamental stones and manicured pine trees. it is extremely beautiful during the cherry blossom season.
