Giethoorn, the Venice of Holland unique in the Netherlands because of it's bridges, waterways and 'punters' (typical boats from Giethoorn). You see 18th and 19th century farm houses hidden between the trees and wooden bridges. Of course all this is best be viewed with a guided canelcruise or trip by whisperboat which you drive yourself or canoe paddleboat. In Giethoorn and surroundings is a fantastic network of cycle paths, it is safe and very well marked, an ideal sportive activity. Suitable for children and adults are the duo bikes.

Dutch Venice is the primary reason why foreign tourists visit the area. Alone or as a group, you can spend at least a day there, walking the narrow waterfront pathways, enjoying the typical Dutch grass-covered homes, rent a boat and sail the canals, take grouped boat tours, visit the various musea, shops and restaurants. Giethoorn is a must-see.

Giethoorn was founded ca. 1230. The first inhabitants found a great man horns of wild goats there, which had probably died in the flood of St. Elizabeth in 1170. They called their settlement "Geytenhorn" (horn of goats), later corrupted to "Geythorn" which still later became Giethoorn. The village is the result of peat cutting. Because of the digging of peat ponds en lakes arose and to transport the peat waterways and canals were dug. Many houses have, as it were, been built on little islands which can only be reached over the bridges that are characteristic of Giethoorn. Of old transport in Giethoorn has taken place by water in so-called "punters". You can hire these punters and in that way get to know Giethoorn from the water. Of course we can also recommend a round-trip by boat under the direction of an expert. We hope to see you soon in Giethoorn!
