A tour of the Belamy Mansion is a great way to get to know the city, one of its prominent families, and the place of slavery in the community. Also check out the Cape Fear Museum and the USS North Carolina. The town is worth an afternoon/evening visit followed by drinks, dinner, and music in the town's many lively bars and restaurants.

Take the ferry to Southport. It's a great way to see the river and estuary. Southport is a lazy antebellum town with beautiful and historic streets and homes and a number of antique stores and gift shops. In Southport, the must-go place for lunch or an early dinner (and drinks) is Provision Company located on the yacht basin. It has a laid-back and lively atmosphere and great view of the inlet. Check out the Southport Jail Museum too! (Note: There usually is a long line in the evening and the last ferry back to Fort Fisher leaves at 6:15pm!)

Michael's is best known for its seafood chowder. Get a few containers to freeze and take home with you. Lots of locals like to eat at the bar.

Stop here first! The Veggie Wagon has a great variety of local and artisanal products including pickled goods, cheeses, ice creams, coffee, beer and wine, great breads, grab-n-go foods, and local produce. We do most of our shopping there.

If you want to cook, get your seafood fresh off the boat at Blackburn Brothers. They will clean the fish for you too. They have all you need for a seafood boil. Look for the sign by their narrow entry drive where Rt. 421 forks and veers to the left.

If you want to understand the unique history of the area, the Fort Fisher Historic Site, documents the last Confederate port to fall in the Civil War. The museum has a nice collection of artifacts and an informative video program. Outside is a great walking trail with interpretive signs wiht views to the ocean and river. The Union’s massive bombardment and amphibious landing occurred on the beach in front of Three Sisters and our grandparents have dug up large cannon ball fragments in the yard!

Drive through the former base back to the river. There are great views there as well as some historic armaments. Spring-Fall there are weekend concerts. If you are lucky the cafe by the river is open. A great place for breakfast or beers.

Go for a walk or souvenir shopping on Kure Beach Pier. The pier has been blown down by many storms over the years and it is still owned and managed by the Kure family. The pier is the town’s front porch!

Getting out into nature and seeing cool stuff

Carolina Beach State Park has wonderful nature trails where you can see Venus fly traps and pitcher plants—two carnivorous plants native to our little island! Hike the many trails to see the region's diverse ecosystems—such as the Sugar Loaf sand dune. You can also rent kayaks and paddle boards to explore the Cape Fear River estuary from the marina. The park is great for getting away from the beach and crowds for a bit.

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is great for long walks in the off-season when nobody is around. Birders will want to venture into the mud flats and marshes to watch sandpipers and other shorebirds as they search for food. If you have a 4WD you can get a day permit and drive down the beach to Corncake Inlet for excellent fishing. Also check out the boat and kayak put-in at the very end of Route 421.
