With tasty Southern cuisine at reasonable prices, this Bywater neighborhood standby is popular with locals and visitors alike. Weekend brunch earns a wild fan base for its copious portions of grillades and grits - think smothered steak and red neck eggs, poached and topped with fried green tomatoes. On the sweet side, you might find Bananas Foster stuffed French toast or homemade and biscuits with butter and honey. If there is a wait, head upstairs to the bar for a mimosa or veg-enhanced Bloody Mary, the perfect jump start to a fun-filled New Orleans day. Come hungry and prepare to be wowed by the charming setting, friendly service and downhome savory eats.

One of the few places left in New Orleans and the Bywater in general. Frady's is an old school corner food store serving great breakfast, plate lunches and poboys. Its a mom and pop family owned and run business which is always a plus. The star here is the breakfast, 2 eggs, choice of meat, grits, potatoes and toast for $5. Now that is my kind of breakfast. Only issue here is that they are cash only but with everything $10 or less you can easily find some change around for a great meal.

This colorful, “funky” counter-serve “BBQ joint hidden in Bywater” smokes its “amazing” meats on-site and pairs them with hearty sides, cold brews and “must-have” bourbon pecan pie – it's no wonder “getting a table” “can be difficult”; a “friendly” staff is part of the “well-oiled machine” that keeps orders moving, so “you don't have to wait long to feast at a reasonable price.”

Shake Sugary is a locally owned creative bakery located on the buzzing St. Claude Avenue corridor that flanks the Marigny/Bywater neighborhoods. The shop also sell cupcakes, cookies, tea breads, brownies and scones and serves savory options for breakfast and lunch. This spunky newcomer to the neighborhood dining scene offers terrific breakfast, brunch, and lunch options from Thursday through Sunday, with plans to expand hours already in the works. Polly’s offers breakfast biscuits; home fries with onions, mushrooms, and cheddar cheese; burgers and patty melts; and a swell house-made Natchitoches-style meat pie topped with a zippy smoked tomato sauce. Vegetarians, never mind vegans, used to have a tough time in this town of fried seafood and all things pork. But that’s no longer the case, and Sneaky PIckle is one of the reasons. Situated on the Upper 9th Ward side of St. Claude Avenue, the Sneaky Pickle isn’t strictly veg - you can get a daily meat added to your daily “bowl-o-food” upon request. But most items are vegan, like the tempeh rueben with sauerkraut and the beet tortilla stuffed with a zippy grain and legume filling. All the flatbreads are good, same goes for the veggie burger, and say yes to a side of crispy, salty French fries

Don’t expect to make a reservation at N7, the hidden gem of a French restaurant in the Upper 9th Ward, simply because the eatery doesn’t have a phone. Nor does it offer live music, Creole cuisine, or New Orleans-inspired décor. What awaits at this unassuming bistro tucked behind a wooden fence just off of St. Claude is a gorgeous, candlelit courtyard, cool French pop music, bistro fare like steak au poivre and mussels along with mostly imported seafood in a can (Think smoked sardines and spiced calamari). The wine list is good. Named for the roadway that goes between Paris and the Italian border, N7 used to be a tire shop. Now the only thing a guest can change there is her attitude.

Located in a stunning circa-1884 Italianate manse, The Country Club is a hidden neighborhood gem worth discovering. Executive chef Chris Barbato, formerly at Commander's Palace, has energized the locally inspired menu, with its nod to Italian-French and Creole-Southern heritages. Try the likes of barbecue shrimp and grits, truffled mac-n-cheese, jumbo sea scallops, and debris and eggs. Locals have long favored the place for staycations in the back courtyard and the heated saltwater pool, open by annual membership or a $15 day pass. Dining rooms are bright with eye-popping murals by local artist Cindy Mathis and artwork from Louis St. Lewis. Drag brunch on Saturdays is very popular.

Burgers and beer. That’s the grand sum of it at this friendly neighborhood pub, which features 40 brews on tap and serves darn good 100 percent grass-fed, hormone-free ground beef on a soft brioche bun. Add fries for a buck until 1:30 am every day, which is good to know if a person has been bar hopping on St. Claude Avenue. Carnivores will love specialty burgers like the Vermonter, with applewood smoked bacon, white cheddar, grilled apple, and a creamy maple sauce or the City of New Orleans, which tops the beef with fried green tomatoes and remoulade sauce.

Located on popular Piety St. this place is the spot for Bratz and real German beers. Step in the into the garten look at the menu and order away, super simple. If you're in the area and hungry for a homecooked meal, then R & C's is your place. Think of a Piccadilly being ran by your mom's Italian grandma and your dad's Cajun grandma and you have the perfect image of the place. This place is very family friendly and tables are filled with generations of the same family eating the same thing they have for decades and passing on those taste to the youngsters. Some of the great items you will find on the cafeteria style service counter is veal and eggplant parmesan, stuffed bell peppers, seafood gumbo, eggplant dressing, and their world famous mac-n-cheese. Compact and crowded, Coop's probably isn't on most travelers' agendas which is a crying shame. Located right on Decatur not far from the French Market, Coop's remains a locals' haunt, with its well-worn surfaces and gritty elan. New Orleans may be the best food city in America (ok, so I'm biased) but when it comes to real Chinese food, especially mouth-searing Sichuan cuisine, not so much. That's changing, and Red's Chinese is part of the conversation. Chef co-owner Tobias Womack learned to riff off of traditional recipes from James Beard award winning chef Danny Bowien of Mission Chinese Food. But Womack and partner Amy Mosberger incorporate Creole touches and local ingredients into dishes like Kung pao pastrami, in this case made with Louisiana's holy trinity of onions, bell peppers and celery. Bold flavors of garlic, chili and ginger inform a menu that is as unorthodox as it is habit forming.

This is probably my favorite bar in the Bywater as its still an authentic New Orleans bar without any pretentious hipster crap like a lot of the other area bars and restaurants are transforming into. The drink prices are reasonable and haven't upsurged insanely like some of the "gentrification" businesses catering mainly to tourists that also love to rip off recent transplant locals. I'm fine with fixing things up and making them nice but not at the expense of losing our local culture along with having to pay insanely inflated prices. Parks & Nature

Crescent Park is a 1.4 mile linear park located on the banks of the Mississippi River, just outside New Orlean's popular French Quarter. Built as part of a post-Katrina revitalization effort, the park offers a smooth asphalt trail through its beautifully landscaped grounds for walkers and bikers to enjoy. Before the park was built, residents in the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods had no means to safely access the river across active railroad tracks and industrial buildings. Now, residents can safely cross the tracks and enjoy this little slice of nature. The trail begins where the French Quarter and Marigny neighborhoods meet, and continues to the east, paralleled by the railroad tracks

The Cabildo was built under Spanish rule between 1795 and 1799, following the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788 that completely destroyed the structure that stood on the property. Designed by Gilberto Guillemard, who also designed the neighboring St. Louis Cathedral and the Presbytère, the Cabildo was the site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer in 1803, which finalized the United States’ acquisition of the Louisiana Territory and doubled the size of the fledgling nation. The Cabildo served as the center of New Orleans government until 1853, when it became the headquarters of the Louisiana State Supreme Court, where the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson decision originated in 1892. The building was tr

Where else but NOLA will you find a character and a place so engaging, strange, funny and creative as Dr. Bob and his Art factory? If you visit, Dr. Bob will probably be there, working hard to create new pieces from recycled junk and bottle caps based on local legends and lots of humor. Take a chance, visit his showroom in the Bywater and you'll be glad you did. No reservations needed, just drop by and take in all the local color. https://www.tripadvisor

Ok. Simply put, the Music Box Village is one of the COOLEST things I have ever experienced in my life. Everyone knows that New Orleans is full of magic but I think this spot may just be the most magical and whimsical place in town. For a while, the Music Box Village used to do pop-up shows in City Park, but now their permanent location is hidden in a nook and cranny in the Bywater that is almost impossible to just accidentally stumble upon. Personally, I think that adds to the whimsy of it because it gives me a very Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe kind of vibe. Make sure to pop the address into your GPS (it's at the end of the tracks behind Bar Redux).

Harrahs is a small casino compared to Vegas, but very well done. Very polite staff and a good facility. Timely with drinks and good, easy access to cashiers and change machines. Good diversity of tables and slots.
