If you want to see local wildlife in one of the most beautiful nature preserves in New Orleans, this is the place. Not for the faint of heart because you will likely see large insects and alligators as well as bird, amphibians, and lizards.

Jean LaFitte used to take to the Barataria Swamp when he needed to hide. Absolutely the most convenient swamp to the Crescent City. Ignore the sprawl on your way and trust that you will be in alligator country shortly. Several fat hikes are available and alligator sightings are frequent. This is a beautiful spot. As always, be prepared for rain.
