“Personally, I was postponing a visit of the cave - as I thought 'well, it's just a cave' - and I was wrong. It is really impressive - one of the largest empty spaces under earth, this cave merits its name - it is gigantic! A must see! As the entrance fee is relatively high, you might want to get the FVG travel card that allows you to visit all venues of the region, for slightly more than the amount the entrance fee of the Grotta Gigante alone.”

“The magnificent castle of Emperor Maximilan is one of the major sights. It used to be an Imperial residence until the end of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and the furniture is still the original one. The park surrounding the castle used to be one of the most magnificent parks, and after decades of neglect, they have done great work to restore a little bit of its beauty. The entrance to the park is free and you can also walk around the castle. The view from the castle and also the park is really great. In summer you can go there even by boat with the Delfino Verde ferries and the view from the sea is one of my personal highlights. ”

“The Rilke Trail is a beautiful scenic walk that connects Sistiana to Duino, running alongside the Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve. The trail is named after the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who lived as a guest of the princesses Thurn and Taxis at Duino Castle. Rilke loved these places so much that he used them as inspiration for his Duino Elegies: "Being here is splendid", he wrote. And how can you say he was wrong? For those interested in studying, walking the Rilke Trail offers an opportunity to observe karstification phenomena at close quarters. Scenic stations have been created, taking advantage of military bunkers and foxholes from World War I and World War II. But the true glory is the splendid view of Sistiana Bay and the entire Gulf of Trieste, a view that should not be missed!”

“Val Rosandra / Glinščica is a beautiful italian valley only 10 min drive from Kastelec. Park your car for free at Centro visite della Val Rosandra, walk 15 min to the entrance of Riserva Naturale della Val Rosandra, walk 5 minutes up till you can reach the river and hike/swim up the river to the big waterfall. To go back from the waterfall scramble up the slope on the right until you reach the marked trail down to Bagnoli Superiore. Take at least 3 hours to do the trip. If you want to go all the way up to the waterfall, the trip includes some moderately hard climbing and swimming. Otherwise you can just find a nice spot by the river and relax. Have in mind that you will need to leave all the non waterproof things in the car in case you are planning to swim all the way up.”
