Lots of history and culture about. If the weather is nice a good place to sit out where there will always be a crowd!
A pre-medieval structure built in 1584 and the site of trade with Spanish Galleons which docked there when trading wine and spices
Spanish Arch Square is a famous Galway "meeting" point for locals and tourists alike and at anytime of the year you will see people sitting on the banks of the River Corrib taking in the Claddagh's unique atmosphere. The Spanish Arch itself dates from 1584 and is part of the old city wall that was built to protect the city and quays. Galway Museum is also situated on the square.

The Spanish Arch, which is located on the banks of the river Corrib, was built in 1584. It was originally an extension of the famous city walls, designed to protect the quays. The Spanish Arch is, in fact, a misnomer, as there is no proven association between the Spanish in Galway and the building of the Arch. Stop off at the Cafe in Born, called Taste for home made pastries and cakes and excellent coffee before you cross the Salmon Weir bridge. (You can see the cafe terrace form the walkway)
